Hey slide,

I can believe the Sportivo stuff for sure.

It seems that every Sportivo driver is under the delusion that it is a "sports car". I mean it does have a powerfull V6 under the bonnet eh.

Make way ! Sportivo coming through ! hahahhahahaahah

I have to many comments to mention, but one thing I have noticed is as soon as I tell people I have a skyline they all instantly become the worlds best mechanics and know everything. What the hell causes this? in all fairness I have had just as many positive comments as I have had negative ones.

Guy in a holden Vk V8 followed me into a car park and pulled up next to me just so he could tell me i had a nice machine. (just for the record I hold most holden drivers in contempt so this guy was pretty cool.)

some commie driver was givin me the eye driving home from work on friday and tailgating my mate in his GTR and he pulls up beside me and is all like **** Off you and Your cars from Japan.. and hes drivin some heap of shit commie with GM bits from all over the States or Europe in it..

and i went to a local suspension place to talk about some coilovers and the guy was all in my face about imports and that they shouldnt be allowed on the road...

i was like farrrrkkk im proud im australian whatever that means, probly bad dreams if your a refugee - but these redneck hillbillys are the worst !

I pulled up at a servo a few months ago when I was heading up north and this biker dood on some harley thing pulled up beside me.

He goes "woah thats a nice looking car man, is that some sort of ferrari or something?" (because of the tail lights I guess)

Thats about the best one ive had :)

:) haha :)

I think he was maybe upset cause he tasted the sweet black dust from my exhaust

I hate old people they are so unwilling to accept change.

I was at a party once

A guy there was boasting that he had just bought a supra

Every one was like wow.

I asked him whether it was a twin turbo

He said it was a non turbo

Then I said -> I own a GTR

And he acted as if the skyline was nothing compared to his car, and promptly changed the topic :)

Just yesterday on the way to pick up a friend i was going down a backstreet doing the speed limit(50) this old guy in like his 50's is walking a pram down like the middle of where my lane would be(unmarked road,no lines) and as im comign toward him and moving to the right of him which would have been on the other side of the road if it was measured im sure,he starts waving his hands around towards me yelling slow down! So many ppl hear a loudish exhaust(as i wasnt accelerating and it was droning,i have a 3"turbo back into 4.5"cannon) and think your going 100 miles an hour.

I thought F*CK that so i turned around and pulled up next to him(there was noone around at all so i wasnt blocking any traffic or anything) and said "excuse me sir i wasnt speeding but my exhaust is loud so i can understand how you might think i was going faster than i was" he replies "well you werent driving very responsibly were you,you bloody p platers in your souped up hoon cars think you own the road" to which i just had to laugh and left saying "yeah and walking a pram down the middle of the road is VERY responsible isnt it" (as there is a footpath)

As i drove off i heard him yell something like "At least i can drive properly"

I mean WTF? this guy was like the epitomy of a media brainwashed import p plater hater

i remember back in bout september, i went on a cruise with all teh act guys. i was with andrew and his front bar is fully meshed. neway, we went to the servo and wen he was inline, someone complimented him on his intercooler. he came out, and boy did we have the biggeset laugh ever, haha stupid old man, ahh well least he didn't have a go at andrew for driving the car, and he obviously liked it.

Steady mate. I was agreeing with you, but you would probably consider me an "old fart". We aren't all tarred with the same brush you know.

Yes he certainly sounds like the epitome to me. I find it incredible that someone walking (let alone pushing a pram) on the road has the gall to say anything to a motorist doing what they are supposed to be doing on the road.

El Bee :(

A while back I was driving along and got randomly pulled over, after doin a license check one of the cops asked if he could see under my bonnet. So I opened it and he put the bonnet up:

Cop: Wow that's some good pipework, you've hidden the turbo well.

Me: Yeah

Cop: So where's you BOV?

Me: Don't have one

Cop: Don't get smart with me, I know my turbo cars

*other cop comes around to see what the commotion is all about*

Me: I'm not, my car's perfectly legal and dosen't need one

Cop: Why don't you just cooperate and it'll be easier

Me... *confused look* OK, see this set of pipes here... extractors... see how it goes out of the engine and into the exhaust... that's usually how a NON TURBO car works.

Cop number 2: *smirking like a mofo* OK that's enough for tonight, you can go

and when I first got the car... At a dyno day we had in SE VIC...

tuner with years of experience under his belt: Hey man where's the turbo on this car, is it a lowmount?

me: yeah, can't you see it?

tuner: nah I can't

me: shit man it must've fallen off somewhere along the way

tuner: wtf?

me: its a bloody GTS!

tuner: ohhhh

and then there was...

habib in a commy pulls up next to me with a few mates in his car... rolls down window... yells out: How many pounds you running?

me: none

habib: ey u idiot, you don't know about turbo's do you?

me: you don't seem to know much about non turbo's either do ya?

habib: omg that's a non turbo? sounds good man

me: thanks... *thumbs up and drive off*

habib's mates all clearly laughing at habib... good fun.

I liked the habib story, that was funny :P

I've actually noticed that lots of people instantly become an experienced mechanic as soon as you start talking about imports in general actually.

And 9 times out of 10 they dont know sh*t. Good old Aussies.. :(

funky seems to have had a lot of fun with people thinking his is turbo. I have the other side of the proverbial coin because it is a sedate looking factory green colour. (Like a Fagna)

I had someone say "That's an R32 right?" He was close.... Then he said "I want one of those, but how much would it cost to get it turbo'd. I said it was too late for mine. It was done at the factory.

El bee

well i was on the train on the way home from work n this guy just starts talkin to me and we got onto the coversation about cars then i ask him what he drives n he's like some old falcoon xf or sumfin then he's telling me how i should get my car converted to gas because id get more power out of it coz he got heaps of extra power when he converted it to gas im like hmmm.... n he said sumfin else stupid but i cant remember

VL-TRBO-RB20 ... i actually think that in some cases it CAN produce more power, theres a place down the road that claim that more power is produced etc and actually have dyno'd cars to prove it before and after installation... not quite sure how it all goes but yeah... 'apparently' its possible...

I was unfortunately involved in a conversation at a party last night where some idiot who apparantly knew everything about cars started to voice his opinion.

I'll save you the dialogue but some of the vomit that left his mouth included:

"300zxs look like taragos"

"The r35 GTR. Now THATS a car"

"Oh you have a r32 GTR? Pfft they are old buckets of crap now.. been there done that."

"He should buy a Magna"

He wouldnt tell me what car he drove but my g/f said before I got there he let it slip that he was a corolla driver.

Needless to say I didnt feel that it was worth my energy to step into an argument with someone who is clearly gifted.

Whats some stupid things you've heard people say about skylines/imports?

Kill him.

It's the only way.

- J.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
