It was Sims' gearbox that let go this time and this one did 12kms after a $25k rebuild so I'm guessing there has been some questions asked.

Not sure where all the chat goes on stalkbook, but I'd much rather keep this thread happening. After all, here we can all hide behind our forum names and say stupid sh1t :whistling:

Also, a story emerged from the Casino where a couple of GT-R teams weren't very impressed with the bar closing at 1AM on Monday morning, so they hunted down the right person and put down $5k to keep it open for another 3 hours...

despite that, congratualtions to Team Close, stunningly fast car and crew. It's really great to see all your hard work paying dividends. I know how much time and effort you put into it, and how little assistance there is from outside sources. As is always the case, competing in a fairly rare car is always more of a battle than common stuff.

Cracking effort from you too Scott (marinetowing). A real shame that you had that issue early on. Once that was sorted you were putting in great times! I'm glad you drove too. Car survived in once piece! :P

Was a tad disappointing to have a simple issue put us out of the running so early in the event, but we still managed to have fun and felt fortunate that we were able to rejoin. After getting back into the event on stage 4 we decided not too push to hard as there was no point in risking a trip into the trees. Come sunday when Mr Ayers got back into the fray we both came to an agreement that we would hold our own personal contest with the loser to be the buyer of beers, this was the carrot that did the trick and I believe we managed to come away 1 second victors!

It's amazing how this sprint event gets so much faster each year, we made up almost 1.5 minutes on last year (without pushing too hard on Saturday) and I believe that with that extra pace we may have still struggled to finish on the podium given the stage times set by the front runners, hats off to everyone, they set some impressive stage times.

This was going to be my last rally as I was going to head down the circuit racing path, but after a missed opportunity due to a $2 part fail and being reminded yet again that the thrill factor from tarmac rally eclipses anything that circuit racing offers, I may have to come back for another shot!

My poor old car is getting a little tired (it was down 3psi on boost all weekend) and had a bad case of turbo wear last circuit meet. It might be time for a freshen up.

Looking like I might be heading back to school for the remainder of the year so TT will be out, hopefully we can make another comeback ready for TWP 14.

Oh.....you are spot on about having the car in one piece, I'm not exactly sure how it would have played out after the mechanical issue and the 20 minute penalty, but I'm sure a point would have been attempted to be made, that possibly may not have ended well :no: !!

Commiserations on the early mishap. Sucks to be out of the picture so early on from a minor gremlin. Pisser on the race within the race. That incar you posted up was mental!! Had me on the edge of my seat. You weren't half having a crack.And the response after the little moment was priceless. Watching that was a bit like when you are track side and you see cars whipping around and think "there is no way i am going to go out and go that fast. Thats crazy!! " But sure enough you go out and set similar times so you must be. From the outside looking in, its madness, but from the inside it feels just right. Really got me fired up to get back out there. You just cant beat it.

Good news on the school mate. Bit of brain food and self improvement can never hurt.....and glad to hear you haven't hung up the gloves/boots. :)

I dunno, I've lurked for yonks but don't contribute much because I don't actually do any Tarmac Rally events and I'm not that knowledgeable on anything discussed, I just like following along :)

This is the only thread on SAU I actually take interest in on a regular basis because I compete in the sport and most (if not all) of the contributors in it are passionate about it.

Here's hoping we can give it a kick in the guts for the coming season :wave:

On another note, and I'm sure Woo will agree with me, how much fun is it driving Zero car at events! For us, who can't afford to travel to Hobart for a 1.5 day event like TWP, it allows us to still see everyone, drive the stages at a decent pace and give something back to the sport we love, all the while flying in like a rock star :nyaanyaa: Even though we had a dirty Subaru at TWP, it was comfortable (if not a little softly damped) and was quite a capable car. Having owned a 2003 model previously, I can honestly say that despite the questionable styling, the 'base' WRX has come a very long way.

It was delivered to us with 360kms on the ODO, it now has over 800 and is nicely 'run in' and loosened up...it's also now for sale :rofl2: (only driven on ONE weekend)

Oh is an absolutely AMAZING gift to be allowed to do mate, no doubt at all!

As you say, being able to be a part of it in such a way is very special. Catching up with everyone, driving the roads, and a part I found particularly satisfying, speaking to officials out on the stages and giving thanks without being rushed in a competetive car. Volunteer officials are such an integral part of the sport.

Buckby Subaru have been a great supporter of the event and I hope they continue to be so. The owners compete, and they and their crew are top notch fellas.

They ever so kindly gave us a new STi for Targa Tas last year, and it was the PERFECT car for doing the event in that role of 999/PR. Fast and comfortable, and very surefooted. Saying that, the bloody stereo completely confounded our efforts to use it even once!

All it needed mid-event was some race fluid, and we managed to boil it on a few occasions. They actually sent a mechanic out the previous night in "our car" to put a couple of hundred kays on it so we didn't frighten the run in procedure too much :P

Such good memories :)

And I'm guessing that it will stay that way as long as you have the Val in the garage :yes:

The uneducated might think you are trying to make up for certain deficiencies by having a 500+ cu.i street car...I'm sure thats not the case :whistling:

Alright - slightly OT from proper Tarmac Rally stuff - but a month from now we have the Targa Demonstration at the Australian GP.

I know 6 cars coming (Brisby, Wooster, Newton, Dowie, Hendy and myself) and I'm quietly pumped for it - anyone else coming?

Have heard our running times are 10am Thurs and Sat and 6pm Friday (straight after FP2 of the F1's). Means a dry Friday but I think Saturday will make up for it! :)

    • It would be different if the sealant hadn't started to peel up with gaps in the glue about ~6cm and bigger in some areas. I would much prefer not having to do the work take them off the car . However, the filler the owner put in the roof rack mount cavities has shrunk and begun to crack on the rail delete panels. I cant trust that to hold off moisture ingress especially where I live. Not only that but I have faded paint on as well as on either side of these panels, so they would need to come off to give the roofline a proper respray. My goal is to get in there and put a healthy amount of epoxy instead of panel filler/bog and potentially skin with carbon fiber. I have 2 spare rolls from an old motorcycle fairing project from a few years back and I think it'd be a nice touch on a black stag.  I've seen some threads where people replace their roof rack delete with a welded in sheet metal part. But has anyone re-worked the roof rails themselves? It seems like there is a lot of volume there to add in some threads and maybe a keyway for a quick(er) release roof rack system. Not afraid to mill something out if I have to. It would be cool to have a cross bar only setup. That way I can keep the sleek roofline that would accept a couple bolts to gain back that extra utility  3D print some snazzy covers to hide the threaded section to be thorough and keep things covered when not using the rack. 
    • Probably not. A workshop grade scantool is my go to for proper Consult interrogation. Any workshop grade tool should do it. Just go to a workshop.
    • In my head it does make sense to be a fuel problem since that is what I touched when cleaning the system. When I was testing with the fuel pressure gauge, the pressure was constantly 2.5 bar with the FPR vacuum removed. When stalling, the pressure was going up to 3.0 bar (which is how it should be on ignition).
    • ECUtalk pages don't mention they support the ABS computer (consult port has more than one CAN), so you might just need a different scan tool. But, I would expect ABS is a different light to the brake warning/handbrake light, do you see an ABS light come on for a few seconds when you turn the key from ACC to IGN? But since you said: I'd have a look at the ABS sensors in the rear hubs to make sure they are not damaged, disconnected etc.
    • OK, if it idles at 1000+ with the AAC, its not an idle airflow problem. The cold start valve just gives extra air when the engine is cold, but you have enough air without it to idle at 1000. I think you are back to a fuel problem, sorry. Can you see the fuel pressure staying constant or does it drop as the revs drop to a stall?
