Well here are my thoughts....and I guess this is of personal opinion.

I  the S2 RS260....I think its got class, is easy to mod and looks the goods for the first three quarters of the car anyway. Biggest let down with the RS260 though is the age of it. Which is why I have ended up with an NM35.....mind you in the handling department I thing the M35 would drive away from a stock RS260.

The most common comment in the Stagea section is "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and not a truer word has been said about the Stagea.

I personally love the look of the M35 and the C34 IMO is not that pretty. But I guess you always learn to love the ones you are with the most. LOL

Performance wise I think the M35 really gives the C34 a run for the money but I have not driven a C34 so I can only comment from the point of view of driving the M35. It is bigger and for me that is a plus as I use mine for work and is brilliant when going on holiday with the family.

The toughest part of the M35 is that there has not been as much development work done on the VQ25DET and finding performance parts requires a bit more work and research. Mind you I have really enjoyed the challenge of solving the problems as they have come up. The best part of the M35 is balance of the chassis, given good shocks and springs and a little stiffer sway bars and the car is transformed in to a great touring wagon with handling right up there for a wagon.

I agree, the handling is a bonus but the 260 would have been a much easier and cheaper car to mod. (although I like a challenge.)

My missus made the decision for me in the end, not a bad compromise seeing as I would really love an R32 gtr in the driveway.

From my experience, no question the answer is S1 M35.

Was going to write an essay, but cbf'd so I will keep it short(ish).

Test drove all three models of C34. The RS Fours that I drove underwhelmed me with their power delivery which was disappointing considering I was coming from an R31 (GXE if you must know).

The interior also did not impress either myself nor my wife.

I did like the front of the C34 S2, but felt I needed more than a nice front end to hand over $25k lol.

Saw the first two M35's for sale on Carsales a night after test driving C34's (s1 & S2) and Legnums. Loved the all black, leather interior of one of them... negotiated and purchased sigh unseen.

Still love it. The interior is MUCH classier and nicer than the C34 (I also prefer it over the silver plastic of the S2 M35's for that matter), the car is considerably quicker than the RS Four C34's stock for stock, is better on fuel (marginally), looks nicer than all C34's which are just too damn square and boxy for my liking and rides soooo much better.

Yes it is more difficult to mod, but there is a strange satisfaction that comes from figuring out what will work best and how to make/mod it as opposed to just picking parts from a catalogue.

Yes, the 260 is the fastest of the lot.... and the easiest to mod for big power.... but it is still a long way behind the M35 as a complete car inside and out.

Having said all that, I have yet to drive a 3.5L M35. Pretty sure they would be pretty easy to pull big numbers from due to Z33 kits etc.

It comes down to what you want. C34 if you want to build a performance machine so logically 260Rs first, then S2 because it has a neo engine and its easier to chip the ecu and lastly S1 for me because it was all i could afford ($4500 v $10,000 for an S2 or $20,000 for a 260RS). Luckily I prefer the look of the S1.

M35 if you want a more modern family friendly car which you can make faster if you have heaps of money to import the bits from Japan. Some look awful, some really nice depending on the model and body kit etc.

^^ well that's the problem like Andy said. There's really not that much performance parts for the VQ25DET motor which is surprising considering how much support there is for other Nissan engines.

But a VQ35DE with a twin turbo setup will be a hoot!

260RS or S2 C34 - Available with a stick and third pedal!!!

this

nothing feels as nice as selecting your own throttle input and gears and gear change speed/ferocity and all that other stuff while getting up the chuff of things like s14's etc through the twisties (obviously loosing a bit in the corners and gaining on the straights)

also, 0-100 in 5.65s is pretty brisk for a largeish wagon - can't find any stock specs for that, thats what the ecutalk said i did the other day in my rs4s

also, c34's are ridiculously cheap at the moment especially when you compare the s2's to r34's, even the auto 4 door taxi 34's

i haven't driven an m35 so i can't comment on them but if you dont mind auto i reckon they would be the go cos they have a proper wagon suspension setup and a lot more torque

now is the time to buy tho, they are all so cheap :D

m35 stock what??

dont forget they come in an aero selection, AXIS and ARX - all different. plus now PM35s can be complied, there are several different models............

i think all the C34 non-believers need to drive an M35

m35 rears and interiors are hideous :S

As I said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" because i can't believe anyone would say that a C34 looks good inside or out. Because I think the rear of the M35 looks awesome and the interior is sooo nice.

The C34 is unfortunatly really dated. It's saving grace is it's purchase price and ease of modification.

the interior of c34's is better than any holden or ford of the same age, its better than the inside of my old subaru too and thats about the same age

also i believe its "beauty is in the eye of the beer holder"

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
