I know this has been touched on in some threads before, but I thought I'd post because I couldn't find the details I was after.

What protocol does the '03 350gt skyline coupe use? Some threads say to use Consult 2 (which I thought was a specific cable/software), whereas others say JOBD (Japanese OBD) which isn't a protocol either..

One thread says "a variant of J1850", another "SAE J1979"...

If that is the case, then this reader should work:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-OBD2-OBDII-Bluetooth-Auto-Diagnostic-Scanner-Adapter-TORQUE-ANDROID-/190898350248

Another forum says that it's a "mixture of CANbus and K-line protocols".

(The G35 seems to use the standard OBD2 adapter with ISO15765-4 CAN protocol (which has many adapters available, like the generic ELMscan.))

The Blitz cable that was mentioned, no longer seems to be available. http://www.blazt.biz/information/cars.php (they appear to have shutdown.. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/391191-whats-happened-to-blazt/)

I'm after something like this: http://www.z1motorsports.com/product_info.php?products_id=2647

What readers do people use for JDM cars? Given the interest in the import scene, I would have thought that there would be readers available.

The Torque app only appears to be for OBD2: http://torque-bhp.com/

Nissan Data Scan has an adapter and display app, however the display looks about as old as the protocols they are using... It could use an update!

http://www.nissandatascan.com/

This scanner seems to cover the JOBD & has been in the UK:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OBDMATE-OM500-JOBD-OBDII-EOBD-Code-Reader-Scanner-/380503945578

However, I'm looking for something that I can interface with a tablet (via bluetooth or USB.)

Thanks

I have been using the obdII cable and software from nissandatascan, it works fine for my V35 and my wife's J31 maxima.

I don't care what the interface looks like. It's there to do a job, not look pretty.

Shame they don't read all the ecu's though. The Chinese knockoff Consult 3 is the best reader for diagnosing I have found. It is quite complicated to navigate the software though.

I see this from both perspectives. If I were looking for a scan tool as a business requirement, it'd be the Launch for me too. But since I'm only interested in servicing my own vehicles, I've found the Chinese clone of the Nissan Consult III+ along with the Nissan software is the only way to be sure I've got the most thorough tool for the job. Call me confident but I even bought it before I got the car. :)

By OBDII cable, are you referring to the Blazt style cable (with an OBD style port)?

Regarding the interface, in my opinion, I need it to look a certain way to be functional. When I look at the Nissandatascan software, I can't see what I require while I'm driving -so it's not suitable for me.

It communicates via an RS232 port, which is very limited. I might try to connect this to USB (emulating a COM port.)

Launch for me. CE5 based so a port of it could be done to windows easily enough.

Are you referring to Launch X431?

I'm still confused as to what protocol the 2003 v35 is using. Hopefully we can work out a solution so that the data can be displayed in an app like Torque.

Yes, the Blazt-II cable, although Blazt has gone out of business now, you can still purchase the same OBDII interface cable through www.nissandatascan.com. (same chineese supplier that Blazt was purchasing them from)

Oh, so you want to display engine data?

I am using the Greddy informeter touch, good little unit and works on our cars, but it doesn't output data afaik.

Another option is the HKS Camp 2 which is the older reader, then the best option, HKS ob-link for android. It is a bluetooth dongle.

The HKS OB-link looks perfect. Do you know where these can be purchased from? Is there a generic / Chinese version available?

The Carscope Android app looks like the type of display I was after:

http://www.hks-power.co.jp/en/product/electronics/monitor/ob-link/

local retail on the HKS link is $229. I'll check a jp price at that cost.

I've not had any luck with an ELM/Bluetooth adapter on any import.

Scott, is the software for the china-sult all English? ie can work through everything, just not intuitive? How well does it support the range of settings in each car that you have tried?

It is the Nissan Consult 3 software, it can do everything you could ever want it to, if you can find the menu in the tree. Supports OBD2 and Consult plugs.

Consult 3+ is a much easier program to use, but the 3+ readers are still drug money for some reason.

It is a knock off software, normally the original Nissan software would only run on a Toughbook, (yes I have tried to install it.) The Chinese have hacked it to work on anything.

I also bought the UK software (on ebay) that allows reprogramming/flashing of the ecu's, and Nats reprogramming etc.

Good news, the HKS OBLINK looks to be read the ODB port of the CPV35.

    • Sounds good Hmm suppose the main thing is, how much do you care about this car? The filler doesn't make for a very good water barrier lol. If there was a tiny little bit of rust forming now, that in 3 to 5 years time becomes obvious under the paint (starts to bubble up), would it bother you?
    • I already have the ability to datalog the voltage... what I can't do is correlate it to what the gauge is showing when I'm looking at the data at a later date. Or something like this. Except getting the oil to 125C+ involves me going 200+kmh at the track so you can imagine this is a little tricky unless I do something like note what the voltage is when I am at the top of 5th gear so I have a point to reference on. Drove car today. O2 still reading richer because hopefully not a leak instead of massive restriction I've introduced. Car really doesn't sound like a LS. It's quite strange. Pulled a bit of fuel out up top. This does potentially explain why my spark plugs looked like the car was running pretty over-rich. If I was tuning it to a ~12.7 which in reality was far richer than that in the past. It will be handy to have the dyno WB to compare my WB to to compare notes that's for sure. At this point I'm happy to just sit in the passenger seat and tune the thing given I've got about 7 million hours on the platform lol.
    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.
