Hate external gates

No mod is more offensive to everyone around you and your own ears. Better for power sure, but the evo that drove past the other day and sounded like a cat being mauled reminded me why I don't like them

Depends how it is setup i spose

I wouldnt have it going to a screamer pipe but prob just plumbed back in

I'd say greg's external gated setup sounds quieter than mine

My aircon line is redone and re-routed because it blew last time on a racepace dyno. Cooler piping i was planning to get re-done atm, as it's massively long with a million bits that keeps popping on the track.

Yeah agreed what you are saying if i was going to go down a simple route of a simple swap then yeah GTX might be the way to go.

If i went down the path and going yolo ext gate, highmount then EFR.

At the moment its whether or not to put $$ and effort into a car i drive a few kms on the weekends. Honestly if i needed a daily for work i would prob just buy an E92 M3. But atm don't need one and feel like spending money on something #yolo

Your piping surely ain't worse than mine - It should not "blow off" the track and my piping is with a return flow and standard plenum, I mean, you saw it. Save your money. Get clamps, better joiners, etc. My stock piping was fine with a return flow cooler at 420kw in Auto land (which I calculated is 13-15% power loss over manual).

If you are mmmming and ahhh'ing about an E92 M3 then budget is not an issue :P
I still think that something sitting in a garage is sad. Best mod for speed isn't EFR or GTX, for most people it is Driver mod. Save yourself 7K and do 7K worth of track days in the thing!

I'd rather give them the ultimatum of a end date and if they don't finish on time you're not paying for anything and picking the car up? try the next shop, rinse and repeat.

If they agree on a timeframe they should meet it.

This results in you doing this to every shop that exists, and having no car at the end of it.
They will also charge you for the half done job that has completed, parts etc.
The next place will just say "I do not want the job"

Not to mention cops and legit roady places don't agree with external gates.

Both are the reason I haven't go with single setup in the R.

Nah mine is also return flow so lots of piping. Have already redone the hoses and new clamps with the Norma tension ones, just want it done simplier so i dont have meters of piping and therefore less of a chance of it popping off.

Track days cant say i enjoy that much with the current setup, would get more enjoyment out of my recent activities of playing Quake 2 :30_no_mouth: A better setup may or my views on track day enjoyment levels

I was told this is an emissions issue not a roadworthy issue?

Emissions is part of roadworthy

Incoming tl;dr

Workshops have a lien over vehicles, where they can keep it until you've paid the bill, so not paying isn't an option unless you wanna fk around with VCAT...thus leaving a project half way through leaves you out of pocket, with a project that other workshops will be reluctant to finish for you and won't guarantee the work on. Not to mention logistics of moving a car with no engine and the engine itself. When workshops have work queuing out the door they won't care about your ultimatum - they'll tell you to come get it and pay what you owe. I think that they should be upfront with new customers, but the problem with being completely honest is you send all your customers to your competitors who do essentially the same thing and win the business with false promises of doing it sooner. Barry never gave me exact timeframes and a lot of workshops who do these jobs secondary to their normal business won't agree to exact timeframes.

Can't comment on other workshops, but how it is for Edge: Barry is quick with urgent matters and repairs - did the head gasket on my daily GTS-T in the space of a week and has helped me out with a lot of other things too, at no cost. Also awesome to just hang with him and other customers/friends for hours on a Saturday talking cars and shit - it's like a family (inb4 hijacking trucks in Skylines). Project cars and performance modifications are secondary business for him...building engines at 2am etc...and there's a queue of these about a mile long to get through, for good reason - he has a reputation for reliable and cheap work. He doesn't do these kind of projects for money; they aren't profitable like the RWC and general servicing which is mainstay of the business. He does them for the love of cars, as an enthusiast, hence project completion times border on DIY enthusiast project times. Throw in young family and I'm surprised he's there as much as he is. But after decades of working on these cars he still gets excited about dyno figures and big/new turbos, drag races, Toyota vs Nissan etc. He's also got amazing knowledge and precision with RB engines, which for many is worth the wait. I always give workshops their own time and space to do things - got a free full respray with this attitude. And once Barry does eventually get to your engine/car, stuff gets done reasonably quickly.

Can't speak for everyone else, but I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I'm 50/50...yes I'd love to have my car back, but I also don't have fantastic storage at the moment and buying a house means I can do without a sizeable bill for a while. Paying rego sucks on a car you can't drive, but still cheaper than storage and the car is increasing in value, so negated somewhat. I'm in no rush.

Fark I better start an RB performance shop then, and my motto will be "we'll finish your car in less than 6 months!"

Who's in? shares start at 800k

Performance shop is one business I would never be in lol. Wait til customers start throwing eBay parts at you and expecting them to work / blaming you for them not, or telling you they can get stuff done cheaper elsewhere!

A not so nice cop will let the EPA deal with it alone / all you have to do is clear it at a workshop

A real prick will give you a NOU based on the EPA violation which means getting a RWC too

Pettett will give you the $700 fine to go with the NOU

Intradasting.

Greg please respond. Stop hanging out at Daniels donuts and highway patrols on Prinny Hwy

Can it be argued that due to E85 ull pass it anyway with the shop? I think this was Gregs plan

As it not argue with the cop but the workshop issuing the RWC

In a sensible world this would work

But modifications (aftermarket ECU, more than one intake mod etc.) have been deemed illegal irrespective of the actual CO emissions of the car, hence you won't pass.

Ash found this out when his RB26 R31 put out less emissions than the factory levels - emissions being too low were how they discovered he had an aftermarket ECU. Test failed. EPA logic.

There isn't actually much in the RWC documentation (read it!) about Emissions.
RWC people pick stuff as "un RWC" which is not listed in the Handbook at all.
"But I need pictures!!11" they say. Cool, take a picture and link the actual documentation which doesn't mention this.

It is at best, extremely vague.

Some people get lucky, some don't.

And some people are willing to pay for dodgy ones, example: a guy at work who have Supra with GT35R, because he said no legit roadworthy places would touch it.

This and police have discretionary powers in all the wrong places - raising revenue, do what you like, stopping a violent criminal, paperwork and evidence needed.

    • After using a protractor for an actually accurate assessment of what is required,  and by NOT using my uncalibrated eyeball I worked out I need a 25° silicone bend from the TB ro the MAF, but, my choice was either a 30° or a 23° (23° is a weird spec), so I grabbed the 23° one from Raceworks I also grabbed 1mtr of 3" straight from Just Jap, I needed 350mm, but they only had 300mm, or 1mtr lengths....meh Also ordered a 1/2" hose bulkhead fitting from fleabay, this has a smoothish mushroom looking head (they are designed for below the water line of boats) that will fit inside the bend, the hose bit and threaded bit looks to long, but nothing that a hacksaw cannot fix if required, the hose will then just get jamed on the threaded bit up to the retaining nut Fingers crossed and the unsightly amount of hose clamps will be reduced down to 4 once all the parts arrive
    • Oil change does not trigger code 21. Code 21 is for coilpacks primary side connection. You can try to clear the code with a battery disconnect, hold down the brake pedal to drain capacitors through the brake lights with the ignition on for 10-15 seconds before you reconnect the battery. I have seen R35 coil conversion permanently cause this code with no ill effects so it might be the resistance it wants to see isn't quite right on one or more coilpacks. Could be inside the ECU, could be the harness, could be a coil. You can test it all if you want or just ignore until the car actually starts misfiring.
    • I forgot you have a Nistune ECU. Use Nistune to do all the tests I mentioned instead of faffing with 30+ year old electrical connectors. You can read MAF volts off that too, there are reference values in the service manual to tell you roughly what it should be in different conditions.
    • No. I think it might be the AFM. Hence the use of the terms "swaptronics", which implies the use of swapping out electronics for the purpose of diagnosis. It's about the only way to prove that a small/niggling/whatever problem with an AFM or a CAS or similar is actually caused by that AFM/CAS/whatever. A known good item swapped in that still gives the same problem is likely to be caused somewhere else. They're all the same. Spraying AFMs with cleaner is an each way bet between cleaning it and f**king it.
    • Oh wow! This might actually work amazingly. Do you know the ratio of the diff? I was told the only thing you need to make sure of is if the front & rear diff ratios are the same. Ours is a 4.083 Thanks!
