hmmm... graphed speed and lateral G from the 180 on Thursday and Aristo yesterday:

(lateral G x50 to get it to show up on the graph, so 50 is 1G. Peak for both cars is 1.2G

It wasn't the fastest lap int he 180SX - the iPhone didn't want to stay on the windscreen inthe 180, so I've only got data from the 1st session. This lap was a 60.5.

The automatic Aristo looses out in accelleration, but it looks like it was at least a match for the 180 in Eastern Loop and the last turn, if not a touch faster... Caught the 180 a bit under the bridge too. I suspect I lifted on that lap in the 180, or it got a bit sideways and scrubbed the speed off.

Aristo felt much easier to drive through Carousell, under the bridge and through the kink. Carousell's double apexer, the Aristo just goes where you want it to, no fuss at all. The 180 is always puts up a fight to get it back into the second apex. In the fast corners under the bridge and the kink, the 180 is pretty nervous on the bumps. Aristo walked over them with no fuss at all. Might be interesting with a bit more boost in the Aristo and maybe without the heavy electric seats! hehe

Hey, what app are you using to produce these graphs? I think you were using an iPhone?

very interesting. it looks like the 180 gets it's power down very well or just has a more punch set-up (I guess the manual vs auto would help too out of corners) as it gets a big speed advantage out of corners which it then maintains up through the gears. the aristo doesn't seem to give much away though in outright top speed and I guess peak G is not too surprising given both on the same tyres. it's interesting sometimes how quick a near standard car can go. makes you wonder how many of the mods we do are sending us backwards not fowards. there is a lot to be said for small improvements on factory engineering not wholesale changes. good steering too. :)

nice vid mate! nice driving too. That blue datto(?) sure had some grunt in a straight line. your thing looked great underbrakes and well balanced through the 3rd gear stuff but he had some serious tow down those straights and quicker stuff but then it looked like he ran out of tyre grip (or maybe concentration) towards then end and couldn't keep you behind anymore. looks like you picked up a bit of pace once past him too. car sounds great and looked nicely set-up too. well done. :)

You're right on both counts - its getting power down better with the FZ201 than it did with either the R888 or the Kumho slicks, And it's a pretty punchy setup - not hugely powerful, but good strong midrange

got to say I'm a bit surprised the big Aristo can get the same lateral G from those tyres despite 300kg more weight to lug around. But I don't think I was driving the 180 particularly hard enough on that run though. Let's see what I can get out of it this weekend...

yeah well you did already say you weren't 100% feeling at home in the 180 after half a year out of it. still very impressive stuff for the aristo, like you said lots more weight, but with softer set-up, more body roll etc it probably hangs on pretty well. and I'm guessing the big 2J has similar power to the 180? around 280hp atw? I imagine with a manual box it would get close to hanging with the 180 out of corners too.

makes me wonder sometimes why we bother with all the stuff we do to cars which makes the NVH through the roof, makes them stiff as buggery etc. makes them look more impressive to drive I guess!! lol.

Mark, thanks for posting. You're absolutely flying! S13 represent :)

Are you taking turn two and nine in 3rd gear? Is that to make the throttle control easier on corner exit? Have you found it faster than doing them in 2nd?

Cheers mate. S13's rule! Spot on with the gears. I never use anything lower than 3rd gear. Same at Wakefield too.

The car has good low down response thanks to the small disco turbo, it is faster using 3rd gear for me.

4.3 ratio diff helps

that's seriously stripped out Mark. very nice time!

what diff have you got? hard to really say in the vid but it sounds a little loose/open out of a couple of corners?

Thanks Harry! It's not too stripped, still lots to go. It weighs 1082kg without me in it. It sounds loud/good (I think) due to the side exhaust I'm running.

You're correct with the diff, nice pick up! Stock viscous lsd. It's starting to open wheel and costing me a little time on exit of corners.

I need to shim it and get better drive/power down. Only recently has it started to loosen up.

I set a PB in the session after that vid with a 1:44.19, finding a further 2 tenths of a second from driving better.

It's amazing when you think you found the limit, then you go abit quicker. I hope to go a little quicker next time so maybe 1:43's are on the cards next time.

Thanks Ben. Much improvement needed but I was happy for an initial test. Was great to be at a familiar track which made me feel more comfortable in the car, and gave me the chance to just concentrate on getting to know it. It was very well behaved, and once we can sort some of the understeer in the slow speed stuff it should be even better.

The bird made things interesting. I spotted it and backed off momentarily, made the heart skip a beat!

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
