On the topic of trolley jacks, a mate of mine has one that has a foot lever on it that you can use to get the pad up to the body, and lift it a bit, which is great if the jack is under the car a bit and you have bugger all movement with the handle.

As for cool tools, I can't think of much that I have. At least ones that are car related and not bike related. Something I plan on purchasing in the near future though is a split collet bearing removal kit.

Fellas, which websites would provide the best deals on Sidchrome/Kincrome items?

Am after a new socket set (a comprehensive one), an air compressor with rattle gun and a few other bits and bobs. Also need a bench top/table :)

Raj try VEK Tools in Smithfield - they always have a good selection in stock. Bunnings stock Kinchrome and Sidchrome too. If you are after a more comprehensive selection though, go with VEK. They are online. There is another VEK Tools in McGraths Hill if that is closer for you. If you are up for a drive there is Hawkesbury Toolworx in Nth Richmond - this one is a bit of a hidden gem, it is a small, but comprehensive, family owned tool shop.

Thanks Terry and Tim. Appreciate the heads up. Will definitely check out VEK - I have been hearing a lot about them.

I read about a few bargins that could be found online - a particular Sidchrome socket set at Repco had a price tag of $300+ and the same set was found online for $190 brand new! So I thought its better to ask around and seek the best deals before spending big dollars.

I use http://www.transquip.com.au/, good prices on kinchrome. But bunnings is hard to beat for one off items these days. They do guarantee lowest price

I have to get one of those. Is this the one you got Eric?

DP1314 Teng Tools 13mm Square x 14mm Hex Drain Plug Socket

Is the idea that you then use a 14mm socket on the end to operate it? Dunno why they don't just use a half inch drive hole.

Thanks Eric. And Adam the one I have has 19mm hex on the other end, I've also got no idea why it's not just 1/2 square....I always forget and pick up a ratchet....

Rob I've got something similar and it's invaluable when putting engines back together for the initial checks. In one case it saved me a world of trouble shooting when it helped identify a tiny leak in the turbo water banjo.

Adam, yup that's the one. The hex body is 21mm and 14mm at the end. I need to get a 21mm spanner. I used an impact socket when I could reach, but the trans in the tunnel fowled the GTR front drive shaft. Grrr, had to use an adjustable spanner along side the drive shaft.

But still way better than rounding the insides with a 1/2 inch drive. Amazing how much that 0.5mm makes such a difference in torque.

  • 4 weeks later...

Looks good Duncan, still a bit pricey unless you where doing a lot of them each week, so I'll stick to the manual one for the moment.

I got a set of these http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/D108 the other day, they are really good for notching tube and hole cutting in thick section material.

    • I thought Australia got rid of the "drag dodgy fuel up to 91 RON with ethanol", which is why all E10 advertise as "up to 94 RON" ? Anyway I put E10/91 in the missus' Mazda because she empties the tank weekly, when all my cars get 98RON. tl;dr - turbo - 98 RON, if you can't afford that, sell it and get a commuter car (or tune your car for 91, which no one does).
    • Yeah i found that alot of parts can be wrong or "very" hard to get the real right one. I already bought some brakes years ago on me "old" GT calipers and they were wrong too 😄  I told them too. Even send them pictures...but they said "EBC catalogue has them on my car... So i dont know what their answer will be. I call monday them and let them know that they are really not on my car. If they were they would be already on a car...
    • Welcome to Skyline ownership. Yes, it is entirely possible parts websites get things wrong. There's a whole world of inaccuracies out there when it comes to R34 stuff (and probably 33 and 32). Lots of things that are 'just bolt on, entirely interchangable' aren't. Even between S1 and S2 R34's. Yes they have a GTT item supposedly being 296mm. This is incorrect. I would call whoever you got them from and return them and let them know the GTT actually uses 310mm rotors. Depending on where you got them from your experience and success will obviously vary.
    • Hi...a bit a "development" on the brakes. I spoke to the guys where i get brakes from...and they are saying that 296mm EBC are for R34 GT-T. I then went to their site: https://www.ebcbrakes.com/vehicle/uk-row/NISSAN/Skyline (R34)/ and search for my car(R34 GT 1998 - it has GTT brakes) and it show me this USR1229 number and they are rly 296mm rotors... So now iam rly confused... The rotors i have now on the car are 310mm asi shown... So where is the problem? Does the whole EBC got it wrong or my calipers are just...idk know what?
    • Oh What the hell, I used to get a "are you sure you want to reply, this thread is XX months old" message. Maybe a software update remove that. My bad.
