Also, in a M35 the 3 gauges are joined together by a printed circuit board - big effort required (impossible?) to separate. And as Dale said, the boost gauge is close to useless for discerning exactly what's happening.

So i can just rip out the whole thing and do away with it right??

Hoping that will make the slot a standard double din after removing the radio and i can fit something like this in its place.

Is this something that is fairly easy to do or will removing the gauge unit cause issues?

I have installed enough car stereos in my time in European cars but these Nissans can have a lot of non standard plugs etc.

Gear shift direction is definitely a personal thing. My sister has a HSV which is set up opposite to the Stag and one of the first things she commented to me was she wished it was the other way around. For those that have swapped the direction, can the + and - marks be swapped neatly or can they be removed? Otherwise this would be confusing to anyone else who may have to drive the car. picky? unsure.gif

Hi Mate, Dale is right about the plus and minus, but he is thinking Series 1. Ours is different. I've had a look at ours (and changed my direction of shift) and our marks could be easily modified. They are little clear plastic bubbles embedded in the outer surround. On the bottom there is red and black paint- so, just scratch and colour them in to your liking.

I have left mine along, because I know how it works, and the Mrs doesn't use the tiptronic. thumbsup.gif

If you pull it up, just make sure you go from the OUTSIDE- don't pull out the little gate around the shifter- get in below the bigger silver bit. the gate is screwed into that bigger bit.

Good call mate; never even occurred to me. I was thinking about the OP's car.

But how did an RS centre console get into an AR-X....

And would that explain why the gauges do not work, i.e. no senders...

And nothing wrong with the AR-X ride height.... :nyaanyaa:

It's lower than a Proton Persona and a Subaru Liberty GT Wagon......

and a WRX!!!!

So i picked up the car today and I'm loving it. Already been asked what type of Volvo i have!

Shifting up or down in manual does seem to work better the opposite way to how Nissan intended but as my V36 Coupe is opposite i think I'm going to have to change it back to normal.

I had a problem within half an hour of leaving the garage after picking up the car.

It was really struggling to pull away and it had somehow got stuck in a high gear.

If I shifted across to manual it said 4 on the dash and would not shift up or down. Back into D and it still stuck in the same high gear.

It was starting to stink from all the extra work the engine was doing to pull it along> smelt like a burning clutch, but i guess it was the exhaust running hot.

The problem reset itself after the car was parked for half an hour and re-started and seems fine now.

One thing I noticed is that when you shift out of D and into manual, it is always in 4. Even if you stop at lights and shift to manual it still says 4 and you have to push down till it goes to 1.

The V36 always goes back to 1 on its own when you stop at the lights if you drive in manual.

Is there a problem with this or do all the M35 start in 4 when you select manual?

just drove home from work and its going well but can still smell a hot exhaust. is that normal for the turbo engine or maybe it's a problem with the O2 sensor.

Anyway Nuan at I rev in Bayswater will plug in his diagnostic tool tomorrow and see if any faults come up.

Cheers

Why not change the shift direction on the V35? Then they will both be the same.. :whistling:

The Manual mode.. when you push it over it will always go to 4. You have to shift to 5 manually.

On the M35, when it says 4, it means it will use all gears up to 4, same applies to 3 etc...

Does not sound right it getting stuck in a high gear.. It has a computer for the auto box and this should control this.

This gear box does not take the same transmission oil as most older Nissan's. It uses nulon atf/Nissan Matic J

If someone put in Matic D it will kill the gear box.

I would get the oil checked as this may be part of the problem.

If you use the gear box only in manual mode the oil will get very hot as when in manual mode the fluid does NOT go through the radiator to cool. It only goes through the radiator when in Auto mode.

If you overheat the gear box it will not shift down easily.

A transmission cooler is a great addition for our climate and some thing most of us have installed.

Cheers

Andy, the trans was serviced in November by a garage in Dandenong for the previous owner. I'l check tomorrow which oil they used.

Thanks for the heads up.

Chris

If they used matic D, take it straight back and hope its ok.

anyway, as mentioned, doesnt matter what the screen says, it will ALWAYS start off in 1st. the gear shown on the screen is the highest gear it will go into. IMO its pretty pointless as if you floor it in manual mode, it will still kick back

For reference in case the shop used non-Nissan fluids, the Nissan Matic D transmission fluid is effectively Dextron 3 and is definitely not to be used.

Not so sure about the Oil,

RVO Automatics serviced the trans. Anyone had any experience with them?

Newan at I Rev scaned the car today and it came up with a solenoid fault which he cleared and told me he suspected the wrong fluid had been used.

Took it back to RVO Automatics and the guy there seemed to know what he was talking about. He had a Stagea of his own as well as a V35 and an older GTR amongst other boys toys. He was quite happy for me to keep driving the car.

RVO scanned the car and it came up with a pressure sensor fault, which is putting the trans into limp home mode. Every time the car sticks in a high gear I reset the ignition the fault goes away.

The car dealer that sold me the car is talking to RVO about changing the pressure sensor and I'm insisting the fluid be flushed and changed to Matic J just be be double sure. RVO didn't say which fluid was used but insisted the problem was not the fluid.

Lets see where it goes tomorrow with the dealer and the workshop and I'll keep you posted.

Remind me how this thread started. With a cheap car that people would say "that cheap, there must be something wrong with it":worship:

That will be the problem unfortunately. They may think Dextron III is fine but it can cause clutch slip as I found out. You don't want to rebuild it like I had to, that's big bucks. >_<

So you reckon ignore the sensor faults and just change the fluid to Matic J?

Do you think the sensor fault is false and caused by the fluid?

You would need to do a full flush, not just drop the pan. Its worth a try, perhaps the dealership would do it for you to save replacing the sensor?

Thanks Scotty,

I talk to the dealer again in the morning. I might just get Nissan to flush it out and put the correct fluid in to be sure.

If the problem remains then RVO can change the sensor.

In the mean while I think I'll keep it parked in the garage and use the V instead.

link to the pics is down you got any? i didnt see the car. 10k. bargain!

Pics of the M35 maybe this weekend.

Now I have a wagon, I may still keep the V for v special occasions

Starting to get a bit worried now :worship:

Doing a bit of digging around and got some information from the previous owner of the Stagea.

The Transmission Valve Body was updated in November at a transmission workshop in Dandenong.

Still waiting for them to confirm exactly what they found / did / recommended.

Turns out the previous owner traded the car in because of the gearbox problems.

He was quoted about $1,500 to replace some sensors inside the box and i think he was worried that he would never get to the bottom of it.

I have found another box in Sydney for $1050 so that might be the way to go.

Anyway, thankfully the used car dealer that sold me the car is still onboard . The car is going back to the workshop next week for investigation and hopefully a quick fix.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
