The other option is to not get a Focus RS. He wants to do track days... Sounds like hes done a driving day and considers himself an expert.

Of the fast hatches, the rs is better equipped from the factory for track work, the golf r is a better daily as the focus suspension is pretty hardcore for daily use.

Is your car lowered leigh?

No stock height, wondering how bad air bags handle or if that's a myth..? maybe one day, spent too long looking at Instagram STI builds ?

Electrician at work is looking to get a Focus RS. But still in consideration phase.

I told him I know a guy who considered one but went STI and he said that guy should have his dick cut off.

He's one of those special units who is not quite kiwi, not quite aussie, not quite pommy. So I don't know what to make of his opinion. Thoughts?

I don't think he was making a sexually transmitted infection joke, he's not witty enough for that kind of pun.

My boss just upgraded from his 2010 ford territory he's had since new. 430,000kms and only issue has been rear diff imploding due to diff cooler filling it up with coolant. Not a bad run. Upgraded to new Ford ranger.

If you want to go fast around a track, the Focus RS is slightly quicker (talking 1 second around winton etc.) BUT that mostly comes down to the better tyres on it.. it should be quicker in a straight line 350ish hp vs 305hp or whatever it is.

If I wanted the faster stock car I would of got the RS.

But I got the STI because I preferred the interior (apart from the RS seats were slightly better) but the interior gauges are shit on the RS compared to STI, and other interior parts + sunroof I wanted. Also STI because I think it looks better, the better sound & could easily add a tow hitch for my dirt bike trailer, the RS has a big middle exhaust muffler which would make it difficult or impossible.

I kind of liked the 90s turbo lag feel and characteristics the STI has as well, the RS doesn't have that with it's fancy engine ?

The head gasket issues at the time were still a little unknown, wouldn't have the balls to tune it probably.

The RS does have better infotainment though definitely, the funny thing is the GF has a Focus ST now, so nearly best of both worlds, but yeh her infotainment much better than mine.

Both great cars.

I only considered Mustang / Focus RS / Golf R / STI as they're all in the price range.

Golf R would of been my choice if I was 50 probably, they're real sophisticated, and auto.

AMG / BMW / AUDIs love them but yeh not in the same price.

That's a ~30k premium over the Ford and Volkswagen

Which are 40k premiums over GTS-T

And yes I've accounted for us being fairly close to racewars and the impact that event has on the local market pricing

interestingly Motor magazine just did their Bang for Bucks challenge..

RS and Golf R both in top 3, sti was 10th or so.

Probably based largely on 0-100 and lap times like those magazines are always about the numbers.

Edit: just saw the article & yeh 35% of score points are based on power
Can't measure the 'soul' and 'flair' of the STI ? like I said both the Golf R and RS are quicker cars

From what I see everyone's scared of buying modded 2nd hand STI's scared of the ringland failures or whatever!

I'm still fairly impressed I got ~60% back for a 6 year old Ford, just checked only 14 GS Supercharged Sedans in Autralia.. still listed for high 20s to high 30s ?

I imagine the Mustang resale will begin to be shit as there's thousands already on carsales

yeah what have they sold now 17 thousand, and now hitting the 3 year trade in, might be fun in a couple years time.

(even if every-one bought the damn Autos.)

they will become the next Xr6T / GTST / VX Commo (LS1) ?

where are you working these days?

Honestly surprised the 1995 R33 GTS-T didn't place in there somewhere

    • It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about. Reliability of everything in a 34 drops MASSIVELY above the 300kw mark. Keeping everything going great at beyond that value will cost ten times the $. Clutches become shit, gearboxes (and engines/bottom ends) become consumable, traction becomes crap. The good news is looking legalish/actually being legal is slighly under the 300kw mark. I would make the assumption you want to ditch the stock plenum too and want to go a front facing unit of some description due to the cross flow. Do the bends on a return flow hurt? Not really. A couple of bends do make a difference but not nearly as much in a forced induction situation. Add 1psi of boost to overcome it. Nobody has ever gone and done a track session monitoring IAT then done a different session on a different intercooler and monitored IAT to see the difference here. All of the benefits here are likely in the "My engine is a forged consumable that I drive once a year because it needs a rebuild every year which takes 9 months of the year to complete" territory. It would be well worth deciding where you want to go and what you care about with this car.
    • By "reverse flow", do you mean "return flow"? Being the IC having a return pipe back behind the bumper reo, or similar? If so... I am currently making ~250 rwkW on a Neo at ~17-18 psi. With a return flow. There's nothing to indicate that it is costing me a lot of power at this level, and I would be surprised if I could not push it harder. True, I have not measured pressure drop across it or IAT changes, but the car does not seem upset about it in any way. I won't be bothering to look into it unless it starts giving trouble or doesn't respond to boost increases when I next put it on the dyno. FWIW, it was tuned with the boost controller off, so achieving ~15-16 psi on the wastegate spring alone, and it is noticeably quicker with the boost controller on and yielding a couple of extra pounds. Hence why I think it is doing OK. So, no, I would not arbitrarily say that return flows are restrictive. Yes, they are certainly restrictive if you're aiming for higher power levels. But I also think that the happy place for a street car is <300 rwkW anyway, so I'm not going to be aiming for power levels that would require me to change the inlet pipework. My car looks very stock, even though everything is different. The turbo and inlet pipes all look stock and run in the stock locations, The airbox looks stock (apart from the inlet being opened up). The turbo looks stock, because it's in the stock location, is the stock housings and can't really be seen anyway. It makes enough power to be good to drive, but won't raise eyebrows if I ever f**k up enough for the cops to lift the bonnet.
    • There is a guy who said he can weld me piping without having to cut chassis, maybe I do that ? Or do I just go reverse flow but isn’t reverse flow very limited once again?
    • I haven’t yet cut the chassis, maybe I switch to a reverse flow. I’ve got the Intercooler mounted as I already had it but not cut yet. Might have to speak to an engineer
    • Yes that’s another issue, I always have a front mount, plus will be turbo plus intake will big hasstle. I’ve been told if it looks stock they’re fine with it by a couple others who have done it ahahaha.    I know @Kinkstaah said the stock gtt airbox is limiting but I might just have to do that to avoid a defect so it atleast looks legit. Or an enclosed pod so it’s hidden away and feed air from the snorkel and below Intercooler holes like kinstaah mentioned. Hmm what to do
