Drawing Up a Build (R33 GTR)

Whats up guys, just pricing out a build here and wanted to throw some prices and parts up to get a general idea of where i need to be and what all I should expect to get into coming from a completely stock, No upgrades, 1995 Skyline GTR

So far, i have a relatively extensive list of parts drawn up, with links , prices, etc that are totaled to be over $15,000.  My goal is to have an engine that is reliable, and puts down 450-500whp. The vehicle is not expected to be launched off the limiter, but should be able to withstand relatively frequent rolling pulls. I prefer to stay with twins, to retain stock appearance and minimize issues with law enforcement in my area. I would also like to entertain the thought of E85 tuning. Here is what i have so far....

I will also attach this list as a notepad file if anybody has any information of the sort that they would like to add to and repost/resend.

I understand that things like the rb28 kit might be overkill , if you have any other suggestions , or can definetly say i don't need , feel free to let me know. Very much new to the skyline scene and always searching and trying to gather as much information as i can. Thank you !

that would be awsome!  i have since also priced out a nismo AFM, but havent gotten to add too much more to the list. Goal is 410kw so i would like to make approx 450whp . Any build thread with that , you can go ahead and send my way. I have been looking for ones with enough detail that i can follow it to a degree to come up with what I'm looking for, but surprisingly there doesnt seem to be anybody posting likes that arnt outragous 800-1000 whp goals and often after a few posts stop ( i assume because they realize the price involved)

This is probably overkill for what you need, but it never hurts to know what's out there.

You probably would be more interested in someone who has done their build bit by bit, that way you can see what worked and more importantly what didn't.

As a quick update , after researching basically all day , i have added a good amount of parts, as well as prioritized purchase order. will add in spoiler to prevent unnecessary scrolling for others.

Stroker kit and cams are overkill. People have made this power with much less.

Parts you've chosen are great and will achieve what you want, but if you want to save 10k, do this:

Keep it 2.6 litres, and don't open the engine. Intercooler yes. Oil pump and sump upgrade yes. Coppermix yes. Splitfires yes. Full 3-3.5" exhaust yes. Injectors, fuel pump and AFM yes. Haltechs are awesome but a PFC would also do the job fine - preference up to you if you want a flex tune etc. Oil cooler, no harm having for added protection but generally not needed unless you're hitting the racetrack. Consider an aluminum radiator.

-5 turbos with 98 should pretty easily make 450rwhp, 500+ with E85

I am certainly not an expert (or even mediocre for that matter) but:

1. If you are going Halaltech and MAP then upgrading your MAFs to Nismo AFMs is redundant.
2. ARC intercoolers look awesome but probably better value / perf available. Also it is implies it is a sidemount?
3. Exhaust same.
4. Think you might need a higher lph fuel pump for e85.
5. HPI dump pipes may yield higher flow than Tomei.
6. Ignore what@Birds said as he may be tecnically correct but boring as over-engineering always yields *better* results.

@Birds the cams and stroker kit were kind of placed in there for post engine death and rebuild , as i am sure when i have to build again, ill have upgrade fever and forged internals and cams seemed to be a smart idea if venturing to above 500whp.  @Robzilla32 ill look into the map MAF  thing, honestly every build thread i saw said upgrade afm (provided they could have not been using a MAP setup) so i threw them in there for peace of mind. Debating on going with a stainless downpipe to the tomei exhaust just to shed a 500ish dollars. Ill look into the higher tier fuel pump thing too, as your the first one so far that has suggested it being an issue . (not to say you're wrong, and i would prefer to upgrade further for a little more money if it prevents any issues)  Also looking into flow of hpi vs tomei , but for the time being, if tomei is cheaper, im not too concerned with a little bit of lessened flow. anything is better than whats on there right now ahah.

appreciate the insight @Birds will keep what you said in mind while purchasing parts. As to the intercooler thing, any reason specifically you suggest an aluminum one? out of all the intercooler kit options on RHDJapan , the arc seems to be one of the cheaper ones provided i dont go with Greddy, and even some of those get expensive.

as for the HPI vs Tomei , the reason i had chosen Tomei was from a comment made on another forum when comparing options

"HPI`s are ok. Tomei have a larger inner diameter. Midori Seibi have the largest inner Diameter. If the HKS with divided pipes are really better, no one knows. HKS says yes, Tomei no."  -mhhforyou from the GTR UK forums

Yes, no point wasting a perfectly good bottom end on a rebuild / stroker kit until it actually pops. But it all comes down to your budget / what you want to spend. If you've got deep pockets then go nuts, was just trying to save you money by shaving off unnecessary parts from the list, as your power goals aren't extraordinary and can be achieved with less. Less mods also = less law enforcement issues. I'd rather use that money for brakes, LSD, future gearbox upgrade, good tyres etc. but that's me.

Aluminum radiator, not intercooler. These are a relatively cheap upgrade / prevention for engine overheat when giving it stick.

i see you noticed my boost virginity.

My bad, took a quick google to see that the difference was the mediums in which they cool, radiator being coolant, and intercooler being air . Thanks for pointing that out haha

Koyo Racing Radiator added to master list on my pc, will definitely add it to one of my top top purchases.

Actually , quick question  for anybody. Will the upgraded oil pump work appropriately without the Haltech in first? I imagine it would, but Im sure somebody here knows better than i do.

Thats a lot of work to run 12.2. What mph?

Well after some research and speaking with Geoff from fullrace , i believe i would like to go with the Borg Warner EFR kit that fullrace offers. Spoiler will contain latest parts list. Geoff pointed out i will likely need to upgrade from the Nismo clutch  to a stage three  to prevent slipping, which kind of stinks for drivability, as im sure i will be spending a lot of time behind the wheel, but i would prefer to buy what i need once, so i suppose it isnt a bad idea. He also mentioned the need for some 1300cc injectors ( as opposed to my 1200cc)  for the e85  tune. Feel free to mention any concerns you have with my list. Looking for 450ish whp , so i believe this setup gives me good response and is more than capable of this power level.  Car only used for street, no track or courses.

    • If I had "perfect R33 GTR" kinda money I would have bought one of the crazy expensive low mileage HJA cars, but I am sadly not that wealthy. I already picked this car out of various Skylines for sale locally, most of which were worse in some way. Only a few cars were actually better but also more expensive. In terms of buying a motor locally, I at least have the option to inspect it myself and juding the seller as a person, and used or freshly rebuilt engines that some people sell are actually ok price-wise. I knew the car was going to require work, but shit piled up real fast and I haven't even driven 1000km yet as the turbo started oiling like a bitch within a few weeks after I got the car.   I assume it wasn't actually me who cracked it, though there is no way to know when that crack formed and if the previous owner even knew it was there. Buying another 05U Block can be a gamble, yeah, but the cheapest PRP cast block is like twice or more money-wise, and billet is 3 or 3 times as much. For now I am most likely just keeping the current engine, as a rebuild or engine swap isn't happening right now. But I am seriously considering buying a second engine and selling mine in return. Might be a sweet deal at the end.
    • Hi all. I need some help buying the correct size banjo bolts for my 2860 turbos. Because whoever installed them tore up the original part, I ordered new ones of this kind, because I just figured these were the most leak-resistant option as I already had trouble with a shitty braided line. I need to know the thread size of the smaller left hole, that is the turbo oil feed connection. I found out so far that the turbo oil inlet apparently has a 7/16"-24 thread, but I cannot find any listing or description of the thread size on this line. I do not have the original bolts. I tried using the bolts that were in the turbos (the ones that were mounted with the shitty braided line) but they sit very loosely so they can't be the right thread. Means either these bolts are the wrong ones (how do they fit the turbo then? no clue) or the wraparound-lines have a different thread than the turbo oil feed itself. Help is appreciated, asking Nissan directly is obviously not going to work.
    • EDIT: PSA to whoever stumbles upon this thread. It is in fact a crack in the block that caused this concern. Just letting you know. In my case, a few cm long hairline crack going horizontally above the turbo oil feed. Classic RB shit I guess
    • Might as well pop in some cams, head gasket, head studs, and a flex sensor. Full send.
