Hello eveyone, Just finishing up my rb26 build but its been months since I have decided what turbo to get. I was set on the 6466 but then all of the G35 turbos came out. I have an rb26 with forged internals, kelford 272 cams, a 6 boost twin scroll manifold and all of the supporting oil cooling/baffling as well as any other supporting mods needed. My goal is about 800whp and my tuner was confident that at around 38 psi he would be able to hit that on the 6466. I havent decided on a turbo yet so is there a reason to switch to garret? cheers!

If you can get a 35-1050 with a twin scroll housing they’d be a pretty awesome choice, I’ve got a 6466 and was very happy with it until the block broke and am in the process of building an engine and going to put it back on

I have a 6466 on my built 26 but haven't got it tuned on e85 yet as I'm worried it will brake as I don't have a brace or grout. How long did it last? Motor was built around 2000kms ago (8 years ago from memory). I wasn't aware of block braces at the time and never intended on putting a 6466 on it..

Mine was the typical stock engine with a big turbo on it and It didn’t last long at all, it wasn’t a huge failure it was just little signs things weren’t right, I thought it had just blown the head gasket and when I got the head off it had cracked between the head bolt hole and the coolant jackets in a few spots.

I also kinda think the issues may have already been there before I put the 6466 on and it made them more obvious.

The braces probably werent around when you built your engine, people were only grout filling and hoping for the best, I’ve gone billet block for my new engine

Done the precision thing. Blew one up, no warranty. New engine and blew another up, well documented oil pressure and not a fkn thing wrong. Both were thrust failures. Went back to a garrett. The 6466 was a good thing, but when it lasts 4 months it can get fkd. Food for thought

Yeah they seem to be very fragile, out of curiosity did you also run a Oil Pressure Regulator?

I

yeah, all as per PTE's recommendations, turbo filter, the lot. Increased the drain size and was unobstructed. They were just genuine failures, and PTE proper got their nickers in a knot when i sent the turbos over to MTQ to have a teardown and report done. They wanted them back in the states right or wrong and didnt want to pay a cent, nor have anything to do with a warranty claim.

Got a little vid on an old phone somewhere for comical purposes. See if i can dig it up

turbos dont break blocks. Cylinder pressure does. Take the timing out of it a touch at peak torque and let it live forever.

They're fragile little cnuts but they do make the power and do perform!

has put a g35 1050 on a rb25  stagea and is in the process of doing a forged motor. Car is amazing to drive and I was surprised at how good it is for a turbo that size down low.
Haven't seen a failure of a g series up here yet.

Or any G series for that matter. It's like no one ever puts them on RB's

It's because a couple of guys tried them with open scroll turbine housings, it didn't meet their expectations and it's scared off anyone else wanting to try them.

In a proper twin scroll setup, with a decent sized divided rear turbine housing I dare say they would be very competitive.

Now with the G40 range it's going to be a game changer, however GT-R boys seem to like replication of setups.

I don’t understand why turbo makers are moving away from the twin scroll housings, garret have been doing it for years and precision have done it with anything with a 75mm turbine and bigger

I've only seen them on sr20s and ej's as most go to a vband style manifold. I would love to go a G series on my 25 but need a t3 rear housing

I feel that Garrett was pressured to release a new turbo to the market and rushed it out the door (big mistake). They now have a decent range of divided rear housings now.

Also the American market seems to be dominated with V8s and you wouldn't really run a twinscroll setup on a V8 (or could you... 4 gates lol).

Precisions are made in China junk

have fun topping up the engine oil with how much oil they spew out

lol...  And you think every single bit of your Borg Warner turbo is China free?

    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
    • Shock tower brace is in +5Kw....LOL
