Hai guise, probably will be changing my oil tomorrow :].

From reading various pages of this thread, I have come to believe Sougi is the way to go :O.

But M5000 is no longer made (neither is S6000 which seemed more than I need anyway?), so I'm thinking of using Syn-X 3000, 10w40? Car is R34 N/A btw. Would this be sweet?

Hi, Im newbie to this forum and to skylines in general, I have an R33 S1 - RB25DET and its running low on oil, I would like to know whats the best oil to use; to keep the engine running good and to make the engine run nicer, i want good quality oil for my skyline as the engines not the best atm and needs some TLC to make it happy again.

I understand, i should read each post and make my own decision, but I am asking for actual first hand responses from people who own an R33 and auto and to keep it running long term.

running low on oil is not good, if its running low you probably have bigger problems to worry about

...so just just get anything 10-40..ask the guy at the shop they will tell you..then if it burns through it too quickly try a thicker oil..like 10-60 castrol edge or something

HI, i just got the car and checked the dipstick, the car was cold but it looked low on the stick, and ALOT of ppl have been talking about needing to use a certain type of oil and consistency etc, ive heard castrol and shell helix is shite? but as long as its 10-40 or 10-60 should be fine, just thought it needed to be GOOD brands

not much use using good brands if its burning oil..

edge and helix are ok for the money ..id try one of them first..get a 10-40 do an oil change and keep an eye on it, if it burns oil then get a thicker 10-60 oil..if it doesnt burn oil then stick with a 10-40

I wouldn't bother topping up whatever oil is in there, I would do a oil change + filter and put new oil in, a decent 10w40 (is what you want for any RB) semi-synth like motul 4100 turbolight (lots of people have success with this one) or the cheaper gw syn-x 3000 and keep an eye on oil use. Only then if it's still burning through oil, it might need looking at (compression tested etc), going up to a 15w50 or 10w60 might prevent the oil use, they just aren't ideal for a street driven RB.

Hi, again thanks for the advice, but I am unsure who it was that looked at my car and told me the oil was low :P I just looked this morning before I went out, and the dipstick is full oil like 6inchs along the dipstick except its darker then brown, close to black, in saying that I believe it would be due for a service and change! BUT isnt it true that MOST service centre put crap oil into the car like semi synth? anyways I went to my local repco and they actually have BOTH Motul 8100 Xcess & Motul 300V chrono which I believe are the best oils on the market for my RB25DET.... I want to get a service done but use these oils to fill the engine and then continue to use them as I have heard good reviews.

thanks, on the other hand my auto trans fluid was low so I put some more into that and see how it goes, I now know it must be DEX III not the other crap as I was told by the service guy at repco based on the books he has for the RB25DET.

^ hey bro, having too much oil can be just as bad as not having enough. Wipe your dipstick, then re-dip to take a reading. Make sure your car is on flat ground.

Too much oil and your crank can start churning the oil, filling it with air bubbles. These will make their way to your pickup and your contacting surfaces will not be getting that constant feed that creates a protective film. 6 inches up your dipstick is not healthy if it's a skyline dipstick!

So go buy the 8100 xcess and put it in.

Check the SA section for a list of workshops, why don't you just do it yourself though? Changing oils, plugs, filters etc is a piece of piss. It is like 1 bolt for the oil.

If I can manage changing plugs, fuel filters, oil filters, oil, etc - anyone can.

Really, for basic servicing like this, not doing it yourself is just silly.

If it burns a poor quality 10w40... but a better quality 10w40 in there.

Example - My wife's Magna burned Nulon 10w40. ~6000kms after I serviced it she noticed a burning smell so I checked it and dumped the oil.

Only 2-2.5 of the 5L came out.

Have mainly used Valvoline 5w40 since (sometimes Mobil 1)... no burning at all and 99% of what went in comes out.

    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
