Probs a stupid question.....

But what is the price differance between a Garrett 3076R to buy and the equivilant Hypergear item say SLSS2 or SS2 which seems about the same response and kws etc??

Read back through previous pages and look at the dyno printouts. Hell, even better would be to look at the RB25 Turbo Upgrade thread.

Don't mean to sound rude, but seriously it's not fking hard.

I would go a Hypergear over my old 3076 the power delivery of the 3076 on 98 was way to linear but taos magic slss2 was so much more fun to drive with its aggressive delivery didn't notice any difference in lag and that's both on a rb25 with stock manifold internal gate and a return flow cooler obviously with other support mods

Here's a set of GTR high flows that Ive done recently. Using ATR28G1 chra, which is in 60mm comp and 56mm turbine

Also there is a update on all R33 and R34 turbocharger high flow profiles. I'll be going up in one size up from the standard high flow. should increase power by about 10%.

Also ATR43SS3 VNT turbocharger is built. This time the lever is working 100% with the actuator it can be activated with about 5 psi of boost under load. I should've taken a photo before installation, but I guess I'm too keen to trail it on road. Feels pretty responsive, hopefully be hitting close to 400rwkws with full boost around 3500rpms.

Is there are actually a break down page showing all the HG varients? The names make absolutely no sense in regards to power or features - that I can tell, and there isn't a place I have found which allows someone to look at and get an indicator of whether something is ball bearing, journal bearing, billet, cast, bolton or universal etc etc... just random names that someone has to follow this thread daily to understand. SLSS2 vs SS2, etc - PU? FNT? what does it mean?


Maybe the first post in the thread could be updated as the varients change so one can go back there and see what is currently on offer? Apologies if there is something like that somewhere I haven't looked, but amongst other things I'd be much more likely to recommend HG turbos to people if I could make sense of the naming and specs - I don't really have the time to follow all the posts as new names and new specs roll out.

They are coded in pretty simple terms, I guess I should have made it more transparent.

ATR: Just a name standing for "Advanced turbo research"

followed by: "Turbine pattern" "Type of comp wheel" "HP rating" "Turbine type" "Bearing type"

"25": .64 and smaller T2x turbine housings

"28": T2x SR20det turbine ended turbochargers

"43": T3x universal turbine ended turbochargers

"G" Cast compressor wheels:

G1: 320HP

G2: 450HP

G3: 500HP

G4: 600HP

"SS" Billet compressor wheels:

SS1: 350HP

SS1.5: 400HP

SS1PU: 470HP

SS2: 500HP

SS3: 550HP
SS4: 630HP
Like the SS2.5 high flow: SS2 500HP compressor working with a Larger then usual (G4) turbine wheel made to extract power from tinny turbine housings like the 21Us.

Awesome, thanks for the response - that makes things a lot clearer and probably handy to have around.

I could see that being rearranged into a tabular form. Frame types down the left side, features (FNTA, FNTB, BB etc) across the top. Power expectations and response information contained in the various intersections in the table where turbos exist (because there will no doubt be some empty cells). You could colour code it so that external gate expectations were different from internal gate, etc etc.

Got mine on Monday which was good, just need to bolt it all back together now.

i have to admit, i like your turbos..but the naming drives me crazy and doesn;t make much sense unless you look at this thread

I agree. I don't run one of your turbo's, but judging by the feedback on here I know you are putting out some great products with fantastic service to match, not to mention you are obviously putting a lot of R&D into your products. I do think however it would be worth considering coming up with naming convention that is broken up into distinct series and generations to make it clearer what your are offering. I have always been a bit confused :P Maybe its just me!

I think part of the issue is the constant development in his forever improving line of turbos.

But I do agree.. a simple size based model code would make things a lot easier, with one to two character designation for identifying variants.

ie 6074-SS for the SS2, and 6076-G3 for a ATR43-G3.

That way sizes are known by the model code and we can tell if the the turbo is a cast or billet item. An advance in technology should just supersede the older model.

Just my view point.

Some SS3 VNT update. The system worked perfectly and I was been able to control nozzle movement through an ordinary boost controller.

It made 394rwkws on 23psi of boost so far

I must address this result was archived by a large size turbocharger using stock cams and stock cam gears and boost. It is not enhanced through larger cams or cam gears.

ss3boost.jpgAs shown, the boost behavior in reference to degrees of freedom given by the actuator controlling the VNT nozzles. The whole boost curve shifts to the left as the nozzles stayed in the deactivation position for longer. How ever by doing so it also made the exhaust gas temperature very hot.

As we were adjusting the boost controller for dyno runs the car experienced some ignition problems so we had to call it a day. It will go back for any other run once I have it rectified.

    • Morning all, I have an RB25DET Neo that's in need of a rebuild. Will need new pistons etc due to detonation damage. Would anyone be able to recommend a shop in Southeast Queensland who I could bring my long motor to for a rebuild? Just want someone who knows RBs and whos built a bunch of them before. TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back.     • Losses have to be less with DC coupling. Provided the battery inverter has decent MPP tracking ability - which really shouldn't be a problem. It's not 2005 any more.
    • Hi, Will the R33 GTR rear brake backing plates fit a GTST? I'm struggling to find GTST ones but can find new GTR ones.   Thanks.
