Australia is notoriously tight assed when it comes to taking in refugees and ahem, boat people.

Like wildly so. We're really Xenophobic by comparison. It's one of the biggest beat-ups in Politics, it's right up there with running two intake mods murdering small children according to ACA

How is it xenophobic...I look at it from an economical standpoint; could give a stuff where the people are from.

That's similar logic to "does not agree with gay marriage" = homophobic

"dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries"

Our staunch resistance to immigration makes other people view us as Xenophobic, when nearly every other country in the world takes widly more refugees/immigrants/boat people and it's not an issue (or not nearly as big an issue) for those respective governments.

We kick up a huge stink over what most would consider an absolute non-issue.

The numbers are out there. We're not the worst, but we aren't exactly a humanitarian open the floodgates, bring in your sick, poor and frightened beacon of welcoming respite for those in need.

what about the number of asylum seekers vs. visas granted/immigration numbers? most of the countries in the top 10 probably wouldnt have too many people applying to move there... and rather look at where the people are going, maybe its more important to look at where theyve come from.

Australia is a long way for asylum seekers to travel. its dangerous, probably expensive and very risky. If you were trying to get out of Egypt or Israel or palestine, getting to Jordan is probably a lot easier. like walking from Fitzroy to Frankston. its not going to be fun, but its doable.

in summary: charting of countries against each other is pointless.

What resistance to immigration? We take in plenty of immigrants, through our legal channels. Australia is hardly an all white population; probably the most multiculturally diverse country in the world. We even have investment schemes and working visas set up for immigrants. If other countries view is as xenophobic...and I don't know who these are...perhaps countries who wouldn't be willing to take the boat people either...that's their problem and I could give a fk less.

But...I'm pretty sure most countries consider illegal immigrants an issue. Look at America with its border protection policies against Mexico and the south, and almost every sane developed nation against their neighbours.

Putting boat people who are trying to queue jump those taking the legal avenues to seek refuge, into the same category as the latter, is dumb. They are a different kettle of fish, even if their goals are the same.

I'm not interested into turning Australia into the sort of places a lot of the boat people come from, which is what happens when you hve unregulated immigration and burden your economy with thousands of other countries' problems before you fix the many in your own backyard.

FKN lol they haven't stopped any boats and it's still a farce costing bililons.

The boats still come, and people's lives are still at risk, the only difference is they intercept them in international waters now & try not to report the details.

I vote Hamish for PM

Prevention is better than cure

There are much less boats coming under Abbott's regime and incidentally less deaths too

It's about sending a message that they will get nowhere here so try somewhere else - that message is being sent now

Labor's version made every boat person:

Turning a boat around and having people die somewhere else then not letting the press know =/= less death.

hamish you cant be serious? its not Australia problem these people get in shitty little boats and try to illegally enter another country, do you think if you hopped in a little rusty dingy heading to China they would give two shits about you? no it would be your stupidity. Same applies for these economic refugees. (possible terrorists)

Its factually correct that Liberal has reduced the amount of boat people and the policies have deterred people from trying as opposed to the record number of arrivals under Krudd, Gillard & co.

    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
    • Welcome mate. Any pics? Even with a DE I'd be well happy if I had that as a 1st car.
