The remote opens and closes the flap in stages and when you’re in the car, you never know where it’s at, sometimes it doesn’t work, the range from the transponder to the remote is shit, I’m going to put a switch in mine as soon as I get it back, 2 settings, open and closed. Just to keep it simple.
They are good and it will be quiet when it’s closed, just don’t give it a hard time when in the closed position (obviously)

Gotcha. Great advice, so thanks again. I'll probably be lazy and do the speedy way first so I don't waste too much time on it!

Ideally the remote would have an option to set up just full open and full closed. I'd only ever have it quiet for stealthy time then wide open the rest. Don't really see the point to in between!

And yes, it is big, got mine as high up as I could get it, I think it’s not too bad but some mates have made comments about the size.
my exhaust is 4’ from turbo back

Yeah its not easy jamming 4" pipe under there! It looks like the 33 might have more room up behind the bumper to tuck a rear muffler away.

Exactly, inbetween is useless, I haven’t had a chance to play with it too much as straight after the exhaust was fitted it went in a shop and I haven’t got it back yet.  But two short drives was enough to annoy me to the point where I’ll be hard wiring it! Lol

The problem is the remote just jogs the flap in the open or closed direction not to a set position.

if you hold the open button down, or wire a switch to do it, it will die as the motor will burn out..

Unles something has changed in the last few years.

I'll have a read of the instructions at some point and see if there is any mention of setting up differently.

Might be able to wire a cut off when full open or closed.

@Old man 32 GTR this looks to be the answer (if you wanted to spend another $600 which I don’t! ?)

It actually looks pretty cool. It even has GPS in it so you can preset certain areas to be a certain noise level. Every police station can be preset to silent mode!

Alternatively for the switch option I found a basic but good video of how to wire up the Varex to a switch-

I will eventually get to this but I wired my Varex into the steering wheel controls on a R34 GTT.

The key is don't wire it into full closed or full open, wire something with a momentary switch, so wire something that has the same functions the buttons do. I.e "opening" when being held in a certain direction, and "Closing" when being held in the other. When not pressing any button, no option is selected and nothing is burned out.

That's a terrible spot for a muffler!

Any more progress @Shoota_77

Not a lot mate, I’m still sulking about my failures!

I’ve ripped apart the gearbox. It all looks pretty old and worn in there. I might just whack my old gearbox in as apart from a grinding 4th gear change it’s a known good box.

I really need to get into it or I’ll fully lose interest yet again.

Ok, I didn't make this video with the intention of posting it anywhere but I guess it gives you a bit of an understanding of where I'm at and my current level of disdain with the car!

I'm hopeful that I'm passed the sulking stage and ready to kick on again albeit at a lot slower pace. I'm working less than 50% of my normal hours at the moment during Corona Virus so hopefully that goes back to normal soon purely for financial reasons! I must admit working 4 1/2 (shortened) days a week has been great compared to what we normally do (50-55 hours a week). So many jobs around the house I've put off for years have magically got done!  I'd rather the extra money though....

Anyway, hopefully there will be a few more posts going up again as I ease my way back into it.

Engine is out to remove the sump so I can get the front diff reassembled properly. The diff guy wasn't keen on doing it in the car which I don't blame him!

There's a few other small things icon do at the same time to justify the exercise.

I got a quote on getting my trans recoed with new synchros that I already have and it was $1500 so binned that idea...  The options are a brand new tranny for about $3K or I do the rebuild myself....  I'm a glutton for punishment.  I've got myself a couple of bearing pullers so looks like its getting done!  Could get ugly. I've already got one (of my 3....) gearboxes stripped down so not too much left to do for a full strip down. I don't have a press so will have to push the shafts out of the centre plate at work.

All the best to everyone else with your projects, I hope you're getting to spend some time on them. If not, get your arse off the couch and get out there and get into it! ?

Apologies for the crap video, I HATE the sound of my own voice as no doubt many others do!

@r32-25t it was a few years ago when I did it so pretty foggy on the specifics....  I think I added a plate and then played around with my spare steel plates until I got the right clearance. I’d have to look it up to see what that clearance was!  The rebuild is way back in here somewhere but I can’t remember if I listed specifics of the plates and clearances.

@r32-25t my transfer case rebuild is back on page 10.  All I mentioned there was alternating steel and friction plates but not the actual clearance. I’m pretty sure it’s all on the net somewhere. I’ll get back to you if I find it.

Cheers @Looney_Head, yep hopefully onwards and upwards!  The last setback was the biggest kick in the balls of the whole build so took me a bit of time to bounce back!  It's such an emotional roller coaster doing a build to this level.  The number of things left to do this round are a lot less than the last few times I've been chasing the finish line so hopefully this time I finally make it!  I just have to stop planning all the other things I want to do to it while it's back apart again....

Once I've got all the tools ready to go I'll then decide if I'm definitely ready to tackle the gearbox.  It's one of those very daunting tasks that I'm sure once I get into it will all of a sudden seem not as bad as I presumed.  I hope that's the case anyway!  I only wish I had a hydraulic press so I could do the whole thing at home.  Luckily I work at a car dealership so I can do that before/after work one day.

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
