Any idea why the shifter stopped working randomly, but would start working and then stop again on the next lap?

It's not the dreaded rusty actuator syndrome I hope. I've often wondered if for short events like WTAC whether there is a benefit to running a tank for the shifter instead of a compressor to get around this issue.

insert technical terms here......    the motec didnt know what gear the box was in, selector sensor plus barrell not engaging after the above 2nd run it just went to sh*% and basically didnt work thats all I know

box is out and going to Jason at Samsonas

Oh righto, Brad is always banging on about the gear pos sensor and how critical it is.

If this was an industrial application (and more so, an equipment/health safety thing) then I'd be mooting a 2 out of 3 voting system. You have 3x sensors, expect and want all 3 of them to agree, but in the event of disagreement of one of them, you use the agreed value of the other 2. And raise a fault.

This then places the common failure mode on whatever linkage you have connecting the 3 sensors to the thing that moves, but some common sense can be applied to make that similarly redundant, space being available, of course.

OR, Tell the Motec to STFU, you said shift, so try shifting!

But then yes, I agree, more sensors needed to.
Put either a wheel speed sensor, or a diff speed sensor on it.

Then get an input shaft speed sensor too. (I say input shaft speed, and not engine RPM). This way, you can now also log and see if the clutch is slipping (RPM, vs input shaft speed), and you can calculate gear (Input shaft speed / Output shaft speed). At least then if the gear position sensor fails you have a backup.

And realistically, the Motec should only worry about what gear you're in for the parts where I'm assuming you have some power management strategies in it for the lower gears. (IE, lower boost, maybe different throttle curves, different ignition curves, etc etc).

But it should stop it shifting. Pull the flappy, that f**ker should just attempt the motion! Heck, even on a sequential like on a motorbike, you can keep trying to kick it up a gear all you want, the physically part of the box takes care of not being able to loop the whole way around the box! Only part you'd have to worry is how it gets to reverse. :P But that's on the driver... An R32 shouldn't be so smart as to try and override the driver on a gear shift :P

All that matters is you're safe and you were able to type that post.

Hopefully heaps of parts you can recover for the next shell.

I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all :(

I hope everyone is all okay :)

Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?

Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest.

Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.

Yeop... binned it

This will be a summary will not many pics atm and cbf

  • Fixed the samsonas - it was totally munched
  • Put a new precision 7675 T4 on with proper split pulse mani
  • Got to Sydney to get to car - drove to canberra to get racecar - drive back to sydney that night
  • Next day all day at Plasmaman putting on new clamps cleaning some things up and adding another large engine oil cooler sitting at the rear above diffuser to keep things cooler
  • Next day - Tuesday - on Dyno - killer wikid awesome pumped out really good numbers - more mid range and on lower boost levels
  • Wednesday - first prac - all day again getting the suspension right - had to borrow front suspension again - out do a lap come in - out do a lap - in - what i had just couldnt handle the load at the more consistent higher speeds - got a lap in at the end of the day that was pretty reasonable

Put it this way that lap wouldve had me in 4th in Pro am for the whole event - with only 700 hp and used tyres

  • Thurs first official prac day - lap out warm up - then entered a hotlap with above setting and 80% effort took corners 1,2,3 and into 4 car felt awesome -  rear came around out of nowhere bang into the wall near front on at whatever 140 kmph

Done, over, gone

Just one of those how did that happen apparently as all indications show nothing out of the ordinary

Got to spend the rest of the time at the event like I hadnt done before - was actually Ok mainly as I had my family and my boy is 9 and got treated like a rockstar

Long trip home, lost a trailer wheel in nowhere land, X5 airbag suspension gave up half way across nullabour and rode on bumps stops (its now completely fine) had to do a 19 hr drive day on day 3 as accommodation got screwed up so just had to keep driving till found a town with some

Now to reassess - hopefully the motor and other things are OK but yet to be seen too. There is no easy fix there is no i'll just order that part and get it sent - we'll have a talk to people see what can happen and what the go is but at minimum its rebuild from scratch struts forward and alot of time effort and $ should and if I return and if but maybe/ when

I have the cage tied into the front strut towers - if I didnt have that things couldnt been worse

you can say its just a front end but if you know what goes into these cars... you'll know what that actually means in reality

Car was very fast. Disappointing we just didnt get to show it

Effort doesnt win you races though

Apparently this is motorsport !

Biggest thing is you're okay!

It sounds like between the accident, and the drive home, it was a pretty torturous trip again! On the bright side, you took the opportunity to enjoy the event more from the perspective of a spectator, than as an entrant!

Sad to see so much damage to the car. It really has taken a HUGE hit in the front end. If/when you choose to repair, hopefully the rails are straight (At least from shock tower backwards). Hopefully the extra cage coming through there has save most of the chassis rails, and HOPEFULLY saved the motor too.

Best of luck when you eventually get motivated to start pulling it down to check it all out :)

    • @Murray_Calavera iam just considering options 🙂 of course it is very expensive so that why i ask here 🙂  @joshuaho96 I looked at that GCG hybrid(i remember looking at it few weeks before) So this is "that" hybrid where i send them my turbo and they upgrade the inside to Garrett stuff and then they send it back. It cost around 1200-1300 USD which is FAR cheaper than the HKS and it is what iam looking for(i just do not have experience like this...to send something off to "upgrade" ) @tylink720 that is like 150 USD turbo no? 😄 I dont think i have the "ease on my mind" with this kind of turbo. I just put over 7000k USD to "LINK" up my engine...dont want to blow it up with cheap turbo 😄     EDIT: https://www.cj-motor.com/gcg-turbo-charger-for-nissan-rb20det-rb25det-high?srsltid=AfmBOooVeOZ6CZ6r1AIv5m-KPaa6BvudIPJTY8LW78khkd-gQlsaCht9 I looked at this and it seems ok? It is that CGC hybrid and it costs around 1250 USD (with back shipping). Do any of you have experience with this hybrid on NEO turbo? I quickly look thru the forum/web and it seems very good.
    • Echo the awesome sentiment 👍 Definitely a car worth saving. Looking forward to seeing updates as well.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
