Received word yesterday arvo (xmas eve) that my head has quite a few issues (broken valve guides etc) and is going to set me back ~$2500 for a refresh :-/ seems rather rich and I know of a head freshly port & polished with oversized valves for around the same $$$ so may as well head down that slope (by god it's a slippery one ;) )

On top of that there appears to be a bit of scoring in cylinder #3 (enough to catch your finger nail) and already being bored to 87mm i'm at a little bit of a crossroad...

Mechanics on holiday til the 7th so at least i have a bit of time to think about it (research)

Merry xmas to me :34_rolling_eyes:

What happend? Did the timing belt skip a bunch of teeth?

Is anyone taking responsibility?

Get a 30 block mate. Bin the 26

None of the above... :-/ Car was actually driving fine and only blowing a little smoke which I put down to valve stem seals or rear turbo seal...

Only reason for pulling motor down was precautionary... adding head studs, oil pump gears, metal head gasket etc...

I did buy the car knowing it had a forged rebuild but done by a shop who doesn't specialise in Jap cars so i knew when buying I was taking a risk...

I do have a 30 block sitting in the shed that's been there for years but everything I've purchased to date (specifically turbos) has been based around the standard displacement RB26... so i'm kinda dedicated to that now...

Looking in to sleeving just that one bore, I'll take a UTT set home from site this swing and check bore thicknesses...

  • 3 weeks later...

So I've stripped the block and it's being sent off to see what we can do about the scoring... Bore is already at 87mm...

Pictures are cylinder #3

Least i got a second Xmas opening up my goodie boxes :34_rolling_eyes:

The mythical 'one day' haha, in my experience that day is forever just around the corner ?

Let me know mate

haha, you're not wrong there ;)

you're welcome to pm me what you'd be willing to pay considering the damaged valve guides and obviously shipping....

nope, still nothing as of COB today :34_rolling_eyes:

I lose motivation to follow this stuff up whilst i'm 3000kms away :7_sweat_smile:

Though my turbos actually turned up today (ordered late October 2018 after being told they were 'on the shelf') After reading @Dose Pipe Sutututu post about sparesbox and the guy having issues with hypertune it seems i'm certainly not alone...

Sparesbox gets all their turbos from GCG. GCG generally have a small amount they carry as well.

They're a lying bunch of scumbags, their entire business works on drop shopping with the exception of service items which they keep in house.

Hypertune seems to prioritise shops over clients or those with a big market presence.

Just how the world works I guess.

    • Possibly avoid using a Cometic one unless the deck/head surface are perfectly flat. I did have a look just then and forgiving gaskets such as Tomei or Nitto don't exist for the FJ20, however the Bar-Tek or Kameari ones look good and might do the trick.
    • Because pipe threads for pipe things. M threads for bolt things. Throw some teflon sealant onto it and dust your hands off knowing you did the right thing, instead of going twice around the block to achieve a result using the wrong things. Of course, all of these solutions are ignoring the fact that the minimum thread pitch we're talking about here is 1.25mm, with the 1/4" in NPT or BPS being out around 1.4mm. You will need to know that the boss you're tapping has enough thickness for at least a few threads. That's one of the reasons that 1/8" is commonly used - because the pitch is <1mm. And why would you look to use 1/4" NPT in a BSP country anyway? Ugh.
    • Just throwing around ideas, does it need to be in the compressor cover? Why not the hot side piping?
    • 1/8NPT drill size = 8.7mm. Since the hole got messed up by me, it’s probably around 9mm.    So 1/4” NPT would be next step. A drill size of around 11mm would be preferred there which is not way of my M12 (drill 10.5mm and tap M12 threads)
