Hi Guys,

I thought you may find this interesting.

As a keen observer of R32 GT-R pricing, I monitor cars for sale on Carpoint/Carsales and look at auction prices in Japan via Export Car’s website........

This car was listed for sale earlier today: http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/dealer/details.aspx?R=OAG-AD-13122446&Cr=3

On face value and on the description by the seller this appears to be a nice reasonably stock car.

The lack of front, side and rear badges always concerns me so I thought there is a good chance of repair or at least paint being added to the car.

I decided to play detective and search for this car via auction results. So I limited my search to 1994 models with mileage between $55K-$60K. Sure enough what do I find?

If you look at the auction report you will see the VIN. If you then look at photo #56 in the sale ad you will see the VIN matches. Bingo!

The car would owe the dealer about $29,000 complied but not registered with a selling asking price of $40,888.00, that’s not a bad earn.

That said, I have no issue with dealers making a profit but I have issues with accident damaged R graded cars coming to Australia.

Can someone confirm this is allowed?

My understanding is that these should not be brought in by law?

At least the kilometers match.

"All our vehicles have full documented history including our odometer guarantee!" - I wonder if they'd admit to its history when asked? They don't say 'accident free' so besides the legalities of bringing in an R Grade car, the dealer isn't doing anything wrong (ethics aside).

I thought R grade were not allowed to come into this country, for reasons you can imagine.

I was told R grade is real bad and RA grade is minor issue , and sometimes average grade 3's get RA grade if the auction house isn't happy to give them a grade 3.

From the auction sheet it doesn't specify any accident damage, which leads me to wonder whether the R Grade is because of rust?

When I was searching to import I found a bunch 'R/RA' grade cars in JP that had no listed damage on the body panels.  A large amount of them had re trimmed interiors though.  Could possibly have got the R grade for it's leather interior?  I remember seeing this specific car and wanting it :(

Funny how you can change the seats, indicators, shift knob and flip it for an easy $10k+ too.

???

Translation of auction inspector notes from the lower half of the sheet:

Interior dirty, scratches noted
Alloy wheels - scratches noted
Door mirrors - scratches noted
Minor scratches and dents noted on the body

Trunk floor has been panel beaten and re-painted
End panel replaced

Leaking engine oil
Aftermarket front marker (indicator/blinker lights)
Problem noted with the aircon instrument panel
Aftermarket tail fitted
Aftermarket exhaust fitted
Shift knob heavily worn

Can't see rust mentioned on the sheet. The car has had a rear-end hit which has been repaired. In this case no structural components were named by the inspector as having been repaired. Cars with repairs to structural components are supposed to be excluded from compliance in Australia - that said there are an enormous number of examples to contradict this regulation.

Dealers work on 20-25% generally.  Sell/trade your car and see how much the yard puts on it???  They aren't in it for charity.

Anyway thats the stated price, you would be able to negotiate for a deal esp. if you have no trade and cash.  Its had a hit in the rear, ok thats not so good, but have a look at the repair and see how well its done, and for a genuine 50K from 1994 - well how many of them are around, so IMO the rest of the car far outweighs the ding.

If they give you the auction sheet with the car, then its all good .

I agree though, pays to be cautious but this one, its probably OK [we never ever completely know with any of them do we].

    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
