Built 2.6L

There are a few thread around regarding built engines. Most threads i found are a few years old. Are people making decent power on built 2.6s or is everyone just going 3L now?

i would prefer to stay 2.6, my thought process is build a 2.6 with great parts instead of an average 3L. also the 2.6 is an easier in out job as opposed to 3L.

whats the verdict?

what is everyone doing these days?

I'm in the process of building an RB30/26 at the moment.  If I had my time over again I would have stuck with an RB28/29 stroker.  A WHOLE lot less stuffing around.  My car would still be on the road rather than off it for 4 years if I'd stayed RB26 (as the base engine).  I have zero doubt the 30 is going to be awesome but less headaches and a pretty similar result could be had from a non RB30.  I've thoroughly enjoyed the whole process but you'd only do it with a pretty high base mechanical knowledge or get it done in a workshop (but will cost a bomb).

You will get 50 different responses on this, it's a very subjective (and understandably so) question.  At the end of the day there is no such thing as a crap RB, they're all awesome!

Appreciatethe response. I fully realise my initial post is very basic and there are plenty of variables. Im not even sure what i want yet to be honest. I guess i just wanted to know which way everyone is going with their builds these days. Im not looking to be the fastest and break records or anything just want something thatll handle a bit of boost and abuse.

I'm building a 2.6 as we speak. Turbos have come such a long way in the last few years. You can get a large (800-900hp capable) single turbo that responds as well as stock
Low mounts if not better. Then there is the availability of e85 fuel. Motive Gtr has made 500kw at the wheels on a stock bottom end. When I handed my car in and said I want 450awkw from 98ron fuel, the owner said "no problem". So the answer is "yes" you can make huge power on a 2.6l motor.

Most RB26s are a few years old!!

They made big power years ago and still can today. My choice would be an RB30/26 but it would be simpler and cheaper to put a single turbo on the 26 and make more power than you really need (or probably want).

I'm building a rb28 ATM, and if I had my time again, I prob would have went a 3L, yeah there's more stuffing around.

But at the end of the day, to build a strong 26, you need a good block, N1 or RRR, or as in my case, a block brace to ensure its strong.

With a 3L you get a block brace and you can go billet mains, in the end it costs almost the same with the extra machining costs etc.

but in saying all that, are what is big power in your words?

Are will talking 800-900HP atw, like the engine I'm building.

Or 600hp atw.

That's the main thing you need to work out.

How much power do you want?

What gearbox are you going to run?

If it's only 600-650hp atw just throw some rods and Pistons in a 26 block, and I nice new age turbo, and be done with it.

if you are after 700-1000 than be prepared to spend 15-20k on a long motor and go the 3L

thanks for your input. pretty much the answer im after. im not looking for a million horsepower, just a tough 26. i have been looking around at bottom end bits but there are so many options. what are people using these days in the way of rods and pistons? is the L19 bolt upgrade necessary? upgraded wrist pins necessary?

what questions should i be asking machine shops?

anyone know of a decent shop in sydney?

Ring and have a chat to Mark at MRC in Castle Hill, he is a wealth of knowledge in regards to building and tuning RB26s, with all the right contacts for machining, so you are paying one bill, dealing with one person.  Most importantly he is willing to warrant an engine he is responsible for building from the block up.

Even if you choose to take your build elsewhere, his opinion is worth getting as a reference.  If it helps as an ice-breaker, tell him Daniel with the black R34 GTR referred you.

thanks a lot ill definitely look into it.

what is the general consensus on removing the engine. are people pulling it out with the box or without?

If no access to hoist box on, but you must have an engine leveller unless you have 3-4 friends to lift it up or down to avoid hitting things. Had a few issues with the engine leaning over but using 3 lifting points could solve that.

2 posts quote by me.  They state opposite things yet the 2nd one was phrased as if it was agreeing with the 1st post.  Hence the confusilation.

Didn't read it properly. My mistake.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
