Another BK R32 GTR money pit...

Turbosmart themselves say specifically not to do this in their instructions:

OPR Instructions 2017.03.20.pdf

CAUTION!

Do not place the OPR return together with the turbo drain line as this will interfere with the function of the turbo drain and may cause issues with the turbocharger oil system.

Sorry but there's no way I would compromise the turbo drain capacity to limit pressure to the oil feed, as that to me is a completely counter-intuitive solution. Sharing lines can create a problem that didn't exist before. People have been running turbos forever without oil regs and a lot do not have problems.

Since the sump is getting modded now provisions will be made for extra fittings on it if I decide its required though, as a reg bypass would be direct to sump separately.

Nice, should be an awesome setup.  Be a great back to back comparison with you other car to decide what is more fun?  A 2.8 with bigger turbo and top end or a more responsive rev monster smaller turbo, smaller engine.

 

This is the main reason I don't run braided drains. I use a 3/4" / 19mm hardpipe barb drain fitting on turbo and into block on the front a 3/4bsp barb fitting return, as its still bigger than even an AN12 male fitting inside. A 3/4 barb fitting is at least 17mm ID, which ends up being the smallest part of the oil drain setup. Doesn't look as cool but it definitely works.

 

Have you got some decent pics of your turbo drain Ben?  I've just got my 19mm tube yesterday that I'm going to use as my turbo drain.  I'll have a Aeroflow flex pipe at the top into the 19mm stainless pipe for the lower half.  Hopefully the flex pipe is big enough as it's AN10 fittings.

Get in quick if you want a non Nismo heritage genuine Nissan one with the wiring, as they only have a handful left and aren't completely stupid money.

Even comes with globes, new guard corner screw and plastic captive guard thread.

My AN10 fitting off the turbo I had drilled out to AN12 diameter.  There’s plenty of meat in them to do it.  There’s no pressure in the drain system so sealing not a massive issue anyway.  I’ll see if the same can be done to the flex pipe when it finally turns up.

That's right, no pressure so you want it as big as possible the whole way from the turbo to the block / sump. If the Aeroflow flex has AN10 female fittings, which it does, it will still probably be too small internally on in the pipe.

Here is the smallest part on the oil drain which is into the block and its bigger than 17mm ID in the 3/4" barb-

Here's the drain on a 6266 and 6466 around 19mm square. Not sure how big your Borg Warner is but I'd assume It'd be similar. Now I need a new drain gasket as I pulled the turbo off for this and killed it 😆

They have actually a port matched square AN12 available as per a YouTube video online. Again, 5/8" or 16mm is the minimum. Dash 10 is not even in the ballpark for this.

Another big day at the King workshop. It was one of those Castle- like moments, as in

"Oh Steve could you move the Camira I need to get the Torana out so I can get to the Commodore. Steve – I’ll have to get the keys to the Cortina if I’m gonna move that Camira. Darryl – Yeah watch the boat mate"

In this case it was more "could you move the blue GTR ? I need to the WRX to get to the white GTR and put the Territory there, so move the blue GTR next to the XR6. Watch the Hilux mate"

Too much shit going on - doing the white GTR bottom end rebuild while doing a complete SY series II front end suspension conversion- look up SX / SY territory front end failures to see why.

I hate weekends at the moment 😡

I've just used the BMRS braided hose for my dry sump setup, although it's expensive it's perfect for turbo drains because it's so much more flexible than the teflon braided Speedflow or imitators. There's no way I would have done some of my lines in normal braided but BMRS in -16 bends like a dream without kinking.

For interests sake I measure the EFR oil drain at the turbo last night and it measures at only 12.25mm.  I finally received the AN10 flex hose and it measures about 11.95mm at the thinnest point which is the actual AN fitting itself that is welded onto the flex section.  I measured my AN fittings that screw into the adapter plate that bolts to the turbo itself and they're the bottle neck at about 11mm.  I might as well die grind or have them machined out to match the rest of the fittings at 12mm or so.  I'm making the bottom section out of 19mm stainless tube so it will have extra capacity to hold more capacity of oil if needed to give it time to drain away after a long pull or whatever.  I'm going to turn down the boost a bit (the oil boost!) with a supply regulator and I'm confident that will be all good. Sorry to thread hijack, just thought I'd throw that in there!

No thread hijack at all, it's all relevant here. I'm surprised the EFR has such a small drain port. An oil reg would definitely help here with any sizing concerns for sure.

Yeah it's tiny compared to the Precisions.  Maybe they self regulate the oil flow a bit more?  I'd imagine as much as the diameter of the pipe the path plays a big role on the speed at which the oil drains away.  Too many tight bends and it will slow everything up.  The corrugated flex pipe is probably a slight restriction but it is 19mm or so internal diameter and it definitely needs an element of flex at some point in the setup to allow for vibration and heat expansion.  A cracked oil drain right next to a red hot exhaust manifold is a fire waiting to happen...

You know I'm gonna hold you to that and make a point to drop in now ! 😄 it's only 2300km or so away which is peanuts for us in the NT.

How is the place ? Gotta be better than here with the extremely high crime and f**kwit rate. I grew up on the Boulevard, raced motocross at Waaia and went to Gowrie Street primary as a little tacker in the 80s - loved it down there back then. My neice still lives there so I'll be down at some stage, so your 33 better be running by then 👍

Being Victoria, how do you think you'll go with registration for it ? I think about this for our single turbo GTRs when we move away...NT is a bit like who you know for rego sometimes as we have yearly pit inspections for cars over 10 years old which complicates matters.

That said you still see shit like this running around every day - at least the have some windows
