I bought it a mate so I can start breeding them. Another PNM35 but this one's an '05 stripper model, no extras at all.

Has some Work Euroline fakes and some red springs that make it ride pretty hard, I'd like to think they're Nismo but they're probably just Cobras, I haven't had a close look yet. Dash also has a crack in it but I don't care, it was cheap and otherwise in good condition.

Finally got round to fitting R34GTT front calipers, RDA slotted dimpled rotors and Project Mu pads all round, HEL braided ss brake lines (pink ones), and 18 x 9.5" DTM Z7 wheels in a delicious dark bronze colour reminiscent of caramelized toffee.

Now, when I hit the brakes, lost and forgotten Mars Bars slide out from under the seats. Treats appear from nowhere! It's like magic!!

What a day.

Front bearings are on the way out (esp drivers side) so after checking , double checking, cross-referencing I settled on HA590125 Timken bearings and hubs (took three weeks to get here). Went for the set so i don't have to muck about with getting hubs pressed out. Also got a set of RDA slotted rotors and pads. 

 

The bad: 

After 45 minutes I got the drivers side bearing out and lo and behold the Timken set does not fit the bore is 6mm too big. lots of swearing.

The good:

RDA rotors and pads have made a hell of a difference, I've only put about 20km on em after bedding in but wow didnt think it was gonna be this much difference. 

Now to play the return the bearings to the US and order another set game.

Finally got a muffler for the stagea after 2 months of not having any rear muffler lol, got this for $100  on trademe, I hawk trademe everyday and this was probably on it for a couple of hours with quite a bit of interest... the hangers looked off from the photos so I asked questions and kinda came to the self guess that it was probably from an S2 stag or a turbo stag, probably without a tow bar due to the hanger placement. Even with being slightly skeptical that it wouldn't fit I bought it, if I couldn't use it, nobody could use it!! lol. I knew the bend was correct and I could always get the hangers fixed, and for $100 what could go wrong!

I just kinda used some force and used the unused hanger as a point to hold it into a better place so it didn't look as shit

So it kinda sits too low and too far out for my liking but its fine for now :D

So its been a while but I've done Project Mu 400 pads & disc machine all round, replaced a king pin & bearing Passenger side, fitted a set of BC Racing BR coil-overs & set the ride hieght.

Had an Extreme Carbon button clutch fitted while in there had the passenger front axle seal in the front diff replaced & the drivers side uni joint boot split so had a new one made up.

put a set Split-fire coils in, put a 2 row 40 LED light bar behind the grill & 2 LED flood lights under the fuel tank straps for reversing plus a new set of tyres & complete service. OK what to do next month... Oh and put some whisper roof rack on the cross bars. and and found an original 260RS instrument cluster in Canada of all places & fitted it to replace the white GT one the the Japanese owner had fitted because he wanted white gauges, but the tacho, was red at 7,000 rpm instead of 8,000 plus it stopped at 9,000 instead of 10,000 & had the auto section blacked out so looks way better with the original back in, while I had it out I fitted LED globes to the entire dash, centre console & interior.

Got a damaged grille from a parts car, decided it would be easier to glue it back together, rather than try to sand off the peeling spray paint from the RS mesh style grille. It came out pretty good, the satin black still shows the shape of the grille in the light but mostly hides the holes in the body filler/glue.

I also found some eyelids on yahoo, painted them over the weekend with a nissan silver from dupli-color, and while not a complete match, the difference isn't too noticeable.

Installed a Raspberry Pi to take advantage of the pop-up display. 

Found that this thing had a decent sound system at some stage after lifting the carpet.

Main purpose is for streaming music (Spotify and SoundCloud) on the go but also setup YouTube, Twitch and Covenant.

Dude.... That's a great idea!

Do you have any details on the install and parts/software used? How do you control the Pi?

It was pretty straight forward!

I saw the thread for swapping out the Japanese TV tuner for an Australian one but wanted to go one step further and playback my own media. 

The Stag has an aftermarket head-unit already but bluetooth audio streaming is the best it can do and the screen was going to waste so read up how to tap-in to the A/V input that plugs into the stock TV tuner. Turns out it's just one long aux cable with female RCA connectors at the end. I can't confirm where it runs to though as mine was unplugged and I also found an aftermarket video splitter for what I imagine was for a roof mounted TFT. One of the labels on the video RCA feed was marked iPod so may have just been used with one of the iPod docks for both video and audio.I had the rear trim unclipped to see whether the input cable was still there or if I had to make up a new RCA lead to plug-in (even bought a Dupont connector kit off eBay since I thought I'd need it) but just traced it back to the front and that's when I found the other wires that had already been run.

Decided to sit the Pi in the centre console for the time being (was going to keep it in the rear originally) and bought a 12v-5v converter to power the Pi via it's standard micro USB connector.

Mounted LibreELEC on a spare SD card and fired it up. I'm using a standard 3.5mm breakout cable (which includes composite video) and it works okay. Couldn't really find a suitable skin to match the small resolution of the pop-up display but was able to increase the font size to make it readable (text is sometimes an issue but video is fine). I tested LibreELEC 7, LibreELEC 8 and OpenELEC 8 but settled on LibreELEC 8 being the most recent build and hopefully the most efficient for the Pi 3. Startup time is pretty good but I have to shut it down manually when I get home.

It's hard-wired to 12v at the moment and surprisingly doesn't die when cranking (was expecting the voltage drop to cause it to drop-out and restart, must be because it's only 5v) but I'm waiting for a module to come into stock from the US which has 2x USB ports, a startup trigger and shutdown script triggered by accessories. I control it with the head-unit remote and a FLIRC v2 USB IR receiver as those buttons aren't assigned to anything when on the aux input (but can use any IR remote with the FLIRC). The Pi 3 has both bluetooth and wifi but, since they both share the same antenna, you can't have both running at the same time. I was going to get a 4G USB dongle but haven't confirmed which model will work with the Pi (Apparently the Sierra wireless 320U does but haven't tried it yet) so have just been hot-spotting off my phone.

I was tempted to mount a blank DIN for switches and USB ports etc to replace the head-unit but will keep it for the time being. Was also toying with the idea of a cleaner source unit (since my aux cable plugs in the front and it's pretty much always on that input) but the only one I like is $2k (can use the rear USB input though) and really not worth the $$$.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
