The Cool Tools Thread

I disagree. Repco home brand 'mechpro' is terrible. Broke 3 ratchets within a year. Struggled to get replacements as they didn't believe that I broke 3 by just doing normal weekend car and home things.

The best tools I have had have been second hand old 80's gear. Even the no names are still kicking on.

This is the time to pick up second hand Blue Point off Gum Tree whilst a few apprentices have decided to call it a day.

A few spanners may have been tossed but at least they're not worn or tired - near new.

I can't believe the price of some of the toolboxes out there.

7k for the box alone and that's for the cheap ones.

No thanks mr snap on.

snap on are the only box manufacturers that I know of that offer life time warranty on the box construction (welds).

Yes there are cheaper, but snap on usually have the best turn around for warranty I've found.

Is that true or did you make it up?

2 yrs ago I picked up a Blue Point tool chest with lots of Blue Point tools and Snap On panelbeating tools as well. The apprentice's Dad did the transaction.

The month was December and the price was $700.

The panelbeating tools were given to Maurice (aka senior) at JLM

I find that repco tools are OK. A little higher quality than Stanley and still reasonable priced.

Update on the rivnuts. Got to use it for the first time with some m4 nuts. Worked great. Took more time to drill the holes than install the rivnut. And it really looks professional.

Dude I love using rivnuts - I find damn excuses to use the god damn things! #satisfaction

Christmas is the best time of year for cool tools

If you had to buy a good price/quality toolset, which one would you get ?

I bought kinchrome stuff for weekend use vs price, obviously there is better stuff if you are on the tools every day, but I've not broken anything yet. they have 2 lines of ratchets though, the basic ones are a bit crap but the nice ones are great.

It does.

You can also easily install rivnuts with a hole drilled in a flat bar.

Oh I can accept it can be done....but not really "easy" right? I've been using the manual tool from earlier in thread and while it works, and in very small places, it is hard work.

Finally bought an electric rattle gun. No idea how I ever coped without one.

yep, they are totally f**king awesome. even in the garage I almost never use air I just grab the electric one instead.

Mechpro is like the bargain basement no warranty label of the Repco brand. If you buy the Repco branded tools you have lifetime warranty and I've never had a problem swapping a tool over the counter.

    • Meh, whilst the Honda is a "really" good car and has potential if you want to drop coin on, it was uninspiring for me to look at, but, it did serve its purpose and is now in the boys hands, his happy, his girl is happy, as she wasn't to keen on the noisy old Patrol, and most importantly, the Minister for War and Finances is extremely happy that her "little baby boy" (6'2 nugget who is currently training to be a copper, which will make 3 coppers in the immediate "circle of trust") has a well sorted reliable car that doesn't guzzle diesel Me, I'm more than happy with the NC MX5 that I replaced it with, it's a fun little car that I like looking at, like driving, and yes..... I do like the fact that the maintenance and modifications that I have done/will do are plentiful and relatively cheap, well........ while staying naturally aspirated slow that is, and that's all I really need for a fun little daily, I can rev the 5hit out of it rowing through the gears and never really break the speed limit  In saying that wicked word, "modifications", I've already ordered something for some noise and an additional "3 ish" horse powers, or whatever it gives, in the form of a header, and, a new set of "cheapo" BC coilovers that are already sitting in the shed waiting to get put in, I had the same BC's in my old NB and found they were fine for the street, hwy, and the occasional track days I did in it, they have 6kg front and 4kg rear springs which is about 10% stiffer than the stock springs which I found worked well for their price  I've also already been in touch with MX5 Mania in Dural, so once the header is on it will get a ECUTek RaceROM tune there (I cannot rev match for 5hit, and I loved the RaceROM rev match and FFS in my old 86 "RIP") In other, maintenance news, I put some new sparkler plugs in it, and have a new set of DBA Street series pads to put in over the next day or so, I'm running the DBA street series in the SS and Honda and really like them, they work great and are not dusty at all I've also booked in a few days leave over this weekend to give me 4 days weekend do some paint correction and give the leather seats some conditioning and interior some Bissell and steam cleaning OCD lovin', the carpet and interior looks clean, but from my experience with the Bissell IRT carpet, and the steam cleaner IRT trim, looks can be deceiving I've also found that finding a detachable hard top is proving problematic, the main reason why I didn't like the NC initially was the power retractable hard top that I seen them with gave the roof line a weird look, the detachable roof though looks good, and is a same shape as a NA/NB hard top, similar, but unfortunately not the same as it has different fixture point on the front, so fitting a easy to get NA/NB detachable hard top is no bueno New Old cars are fun, cleaning, hunting and playing around brings much joy How are your beasties going? Do you still have the Skyline with the LS???, or Barra??? that you were playing with
    • Unfortunately this new build series will come a car too late for you Mark... However, he does do a wicked MX5 build already you can also check out...
    • Wow, they are some big images! 🤣 That's quite the intake from Stillen!  Theres 3 things you can use a bed for and one of them is laying out car parts. I love it.
    • Hi all, Bit of an odd question but the only OEM washer nozzles I can find readily available are listed as fitting the R33/R34 models. The R32 (shown below) has it's versions sold as a LH and RH piece while the R33/R34 nozzles are sold as a set (part number B8K30-AA000). Has anyone tried using these nozzles on their R32 Skyline hood? Do they fit without issues or with slight shaving, or are they completely incompatible? Visually they look almost exactly the same as the original factory nozzles I have now. They aren't expensive so I can eat the $30 or so that it would cost to try but I figured I'd ask in case someone had tried it already. Thanks!
    • I'm in the market for 370GT.  I live in Canberra and not much available so I'm looking interstate.  Can anyone recommend an inspection service with expert knowledge of Skylines? Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide (Elizabeth area)
