It's not the psi or the temperature* that's important. It's shaft speed. Even with boost the diesels don't make mush power, and even though they run very high air-fuel ratios compared to petrol engines, they still end up moving far less air on a diesel than they end up moving on a petrol engine at the same boost. They end up at a different place on the compressor map on diesels. Higher pressure ratio, lower air flow rate. This in turn results in lower shaft speed. It's shaft speed that is the killer. * Yeah, OK, temperature helps/doesnt help, depending on which way your looking at it. The lower temperatures in diesels almost certainly mean that the turbo will accept some higher shaft speed before you risk spinning the turbine off the shaft. As to the OP......there are no RB single turbos with steel wheels. If yours is not ceramic, then it's been fiddled with and we can't tell you what it effectively is.

Greddy Intake Plenum worth the trouble?
GTSBoy replied to etang789's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
It will cost you some low-mid torque for a very dubious return ofa possible increase up top. There is little to no benefit to the cost and hassle of fitting them unless you're in love with the idea of getting rid of the intercooler piping and crossover pipe. -
This!

OK, so next major suspect is the switch on the back of the ignition barrel.

The Ign fuse in the bay isn't the only one. had a look at the fusebox inside the dash?

Retrofit generally means a backward step. If you want to put HIDs in, that's an upgrade.

R33s suck for ECU. You have to get an ECU from another model (Z32 or R32 typically) and put a Nistune board in that, because the R33 ECU is a stupid orphan that even Nissan don't love. Work on it being >$1000 to get an ECU into it and turned. Turning the boost up costs very little. You just need a cheap boost controller. A decent (electronic) boost controller will cost you a few hundred.

30-40HP is in the realms of possibility without changing anything - just adding boost. But stock boost is 7 psi and the limit is not much more than 10 before the ECU starts to rape you from behind. It's not exactly same same with an R33 RB25, but my Neo is stock. I have a bigger cooler, good dump pipe and ~12 psi. And Nistune. Without the tuneability I would not be able to run that much boost. It started to get evil at 10. On a sensible DD dyno mine did ~190rwkW recently, on 98. There's not a lot more available without risking breaking the turbo. Anything more serious requires at least a turbo, and an AFM or a complete new ECU to get rid of the AFM, and injectors.

Define your terms. Easy, reliable and cheap mean very different things to different people. "Reasonably quick" is also a very rubbery term. It's very simple though without changing the turbo. You can perhaps get up to ~200rwkW (depending on the dyno!) on the stocker, but you won't do it well without an intercooler and you won't do it at all on stock management. You need to have a way to dial out the horrible R&R that the R33 ECU will cripple you with if you try.

RB25 Tomei 256 poncams vs HKS 256/264
GTSBoy replied to LaurelPWR's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Yeah, more boost is usually the first thing! -
I think you missed the point of the word "retrofit". Going backwards from HIDs to halogen projectors is the funny part.

S1 RB25 intake cam torque issue

Any head shop can see how straight the cam tunnels are. -
S1 RB25 intake cam torque issue
GTSBoy replied to slow'n'sideways's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Decked != straight. Take a bent head. Machine the bottom surface of it flat. Sits on the block nicely, BUT THE TOP IS STILL BENT. It's a common mistake. -
Tyres and wheels size

i think the inner fit on R33s and 4s is same-same but the outer guards are not quite the same. -

Possibly something is not straight. Block, head or cam or any combo of. -
I think that they're the same as silver top ones and still available. If it were me needing to do surgery on the coil area of any RB these days though, I'd be finding some Yaris coils, or R35 coils or any of a dozen equivalents and changing everything.

RB30DE NEO engine build questions
GTSBoy replied to r31dorifto's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Um, 3 litre twin cam 12:1 compression and E85, and you only want 160kW? I assume that's at the wheels, but it's still a pretty low goal. I mean, a stock 7M-GE was 142 kW (at the fly) way back in the 80s. The 25DE Neo is 147kW at the fly. You're only talking about 50 extra kW at the treads with an extra 20% displacement and cams and porting and alcohol. I'd be aiming for the moon. 9000rpm, Weber pattern (or similar) ITBs in a fibreglass airbox (think Pipercross), 280+° and as much lift as can be squeezed into the head. -
Nengun, RHDjapan, etc.

And stiff as f**k springs, no? -
It's a module behind the dash in front of left knee. Well, it is on R32 and I can't imagine why they'd move it. Just pull the plug.
